Hanging Around

I'm creating a boombox installation and a collaborator is suggesting that some of the boomboxes be hung by their handles from pipes in the space. The handle would be wrapped in pipe foam and the box suspended by wire cables.

Would you hang your M90, 550, or 999 from a pipe for a day? :hmmm:

Oh yeah, all the boxes will be loaded with 10K mAh D batteries.

Go!

In California, your always talking earthquakes. One good bounce and the handles will break! But then again, I have all my radio's on glass shelving :-/

I've got a Sony CFS-85 hanging by metal hooks at work. I think as long as you have them suspended from each end of the handle you will be ok. You just need to make sure the wire doesn't cut into the plastic handle + you need to ensure the wires don't slip along the handle leaving a heavy boombox hanging suspended by one handle end.

James.... :-)

Good question........ I thought about doing that with some boxes and I think for a day you have nothing to worry about.

It depends on from where you suspend it. Suspending far from the centre and close to the handles would be better because some handles might deform and bend over time. Again those foam insulation for hot water pipes will help distribute weight uniformly without making any ugly scratches on handles from the suspending parts.

I displayed about a half dozen hanging from the ceiling in a man cave, they were the lightest boomers of my then collection. They hung up for a good year before I lost the cave.. and yes they were all held on the far outside of the handles or by strap hook locations. None experienced any damage at all.

May have a pic somewhere if I can find one..

If you can carry em you can hang em.
That was my thought too, but you usually don't carry a box for 12 hours!

One of the guys I interviewed for the Boomboxラジカセ Creators project recounted how he carried his M70 around so much that he broke the handle! :w00t:

After hearing that story I had second thoughts about hanging them. Albeit, he was carrying it in the middle of the handle when it broke, so if I hang them, they will definitely be hung from the ends.

Go!

Hey Miles,

How about a NET? You could put the radio in a strong net and then it's not hanging by the handle :hmmm: Plus you can see the radio, no problem

..like I said, they were all pretty light boxes...and without batteries.

I don't think I'd hang any of those you listed, the 550 seems to be cheaper/lighter than it looks but those handles break pretty easy (how do I know? mines missing the handle!)
