Hello,
As a young university student I regularly take all my boxes to parties and out on town for blasting. So far it has been great, not damage or any misfortunes. Until last night. I was on my way to a club, 5 m from getting out of a car the handle just snaps sending the box to the ground. Broke off just at the top so the handle piece is almost completely straight. It would have been fine for an M70 (however unlikely) or something cheap but this was the Toshiba 9990 japan only model, my rarest boomer :'-( :sadno:. So chances of finding a new handle are pretty much 0. Could you glue it back on ? are there glues that strong ? and then carry it with a strap around the body ? Replace the handle ? anyone done this before please give me some tips. Amazingly it still works perfect though, just some marks on the case and a broken cassette.

R.I.P. 9/10 condition bombeat

Maybe this is sign that I shouldn't have so many boomboxes and get so attached to them. Or I should just create my own ultimate super-boombox somehow. Or just buy an army of M70s..

This got a bit sad, in fact after picking up the boombox and having a sad half hour shedding a tear for my fallen boombrother I had a good night and was comforted by a gorgeous Norwegian. It's only a radio after all, there are lots more out there.

Peace

not sure if there is any glue you could trust with that very rare box ?

but you could hand-bend a 1/16" or 3/32 " x 1" strip of aluminim to make a strong handle ..

and you can definitely
more easily fasten a luggage type strap around the bottom and sides of the case

Oh no!! That's devastating news.

But........ I'm positive it shares the exact handle with other toshibas. Let me do some measuring, I'll be back........

Just as I thought. Same handle as the 8980, 8860 and rts93. And that's just from my stash of tosh boxes.
There where heaps of models in the 8xxx series and I'll bet most have the same handle.
They may have a different color covering although I'm sure it could be painted easily enough.
Now to find a parts box. There must be someone who can help.
A toshiba handle measuring 445mm across........

Hello,
Thank you for your advice:
Redbenjoe Bending metal and such is a bit out of my league atm, but that does sound like a good idea.

Alfie that is good news, but all those boxes I really quite like with a handle so I can use them, because they're awesome ! Any crappy ones with the same handle ? I'll have a look around.

Here are some pictures (of the box ;-) )

I have an rts93 parts box. I'm out of town at the moment but if it's the same handle I'll be able to sort you out. Let you know in a couple days.

I'm 100% sure that handle bracket is the same as the rts 93.

Looks like we might get this saved after all!!!

The moral of this story is when carrying a box around for long distances, make sure the handle ends are made of metal and not plastic..or use a strap when applicable..

Yeah, terrible!

Every box I intend on carrying (where possible) I replace the handle with one with metal brackets.
Had this happen with my TRC-975...

Should be an easy swap out though for another Toshiba handle. Good luck Space Lobster!

How's the tape deck on that parts rts 93 by the way?

I think it's a safe bet that it's non operational. LEDmeter would know better than me as it hasn't powered up since I've had it and I don't even have a remote for my good one.
