Here's a little story:
We recently moved my 94 year old grandmother to an assisted living facility nearby, and are in the process of selling her condo in the posh Boston suburb of Lexington. She and my late grandfather had accumulated 80 years worth of treasures and she can only take so much to her new place. So, she has been distributing furnishings and valuables to the family to save them from auction and destruction. I picked out several items - some valuable, some sentimental.
I wasn't letting Grampa Lenny's HiFi go into the back of a box van, so I took it home. This resided in the living room in her old house from 1966 to 1995, when she sold the place after my grandfather passed away. We used it pretty much every day to listen to anything from Perry Como to AC/DC. It went into storage when she bought the condo in '95, and it hadn't seen the light of day until I threw it in the back of my work truck 2 weeks ago.
I took it home and went to work. The changer was totally locked up from lube that had turned to glue. I stripped the changer to it's bones, cleaned it up, and re-lubed it. It was pretty easy. I powered it back up and spun this Steely Dan record. I don't recall using the changer after around '85, so to see it spinning again was like Christmas morning. I sent this video to my Mom and she said she cried, because she had so many fond memories of my grandparents dancing to big bands and disco in the living room. It's a really nice piece - my grandfather took impecable care of everything he owned.
I currently have the receiver pulled out, as I am waiting for my caps from Parts Express. I can't wait to get it all back together. I'm hoping to have it wrapped up by mid-week. My Mom is flying up from FL for a few days, so I really want her to see it brought back to it's former glory.
Just wanted to share...
