Hiya,

I'm in the process of 'rethreading' the tuning 'stringy thingy' on my Sharp GF9000 (sorry for the lack of technical terminology, I confess to being an amateur in all matters boom box) and, despite a couple of hours playing spaghetti origami, I managed it but I can't have got it right because the tuning know now won't turn. Can anyone help with a step by step, idiot proof advice please? Needless to say I have only two hands to use at a time and not the six that Sharp seem to require to get the job done!

Hehe these are a pain in the ass eh? I have done a couple of these but both times i had the luxury of the string being place but broken so all i had to do was not what goes where and which way around to wrap it. It it doesnt turn one of the steps is probably wound the wrong way.

I always start by turning the tuner all the way to one side, usually the right so the most thread is on the main winder as possible. I could possibly crack open my GF9000 and take a snap if worse comes to worse!!

Tell me about it! Have a back ache now from so much bending over, it's not a sit-down-in-one-position type of job. I figured out setting the tuning indicator to one end after the second attempt now it's all about which way to wind around the tuning spindle (and by how much) and how much to wind around the double 'roller' (and by how much) as well as how much to wind in each section. There's probably more but I can only cope with a bit at a time 'cos there's a few combinations to figure out! Of course, the big wheelie thing needs to be turned fully one way of the other just to complicate things even more by increasing the winding permutations!

Ahh.....'Tuner Strings' - thanks for that, that's the second thing I've learned today (the other being "Don't mess with 'em"!).

Anytime I had to restring the tuner I always got help because an extra hand or 2 makes it easier ;-)

Oooh, thanks! Watched the vid and found it helpful with the basic principle although the GF 9000 is a little more complicated with the string going every which way and back again. I gave it another go today and thought I had it all sorted but the tuner only went 3/4 of the way. I've had a thought on this so will try again tomorrow. I spent the afternoon on the speakers & grills to rest my tiny brain! Still, I appreciate the help, thanks.

Just an extra hand or two? Can't have been a GF9000!!!

I've now solved the Tuner String Origami puzzle and all appears well (almost) after much trial and error, I have no desire to repeat the process 'cos I think I got there with more luck than judgement.

All works well apart from there being no FM reception (other bands are OK and I could receive FM signals prior to the refurbishment), does the telescopic ariel 'work' for the FM signal (only) with the internal ariel supplying the signal for the other wavebands? If this is the case then I'll know where to start looking for the problem.

yes you should connect the antenna wire if its not already connected, the antenna should at least pickup fm signals.

I only just saw this post. I may be a little late but let me know if you need a pic of the tuner string route and I'll post up a pic of mine if it'll help

Hiya and thanks. I'm very sure I connected everything correctly and double checked but I will go back to this soon and recheck again. In a way, I hope it is this as would/should/ought to be the simplest solution. Thanks again.

Ah, that's very kind of you indeed. If ever I need to remove the tuning string again then I'll be sure to let you know but first I'd take detailed photos to compare with any you may be able to show me? At least I can then be doubly sure.
