So are you saying it sounds crap at low volume levels and as you turn it up over halfway it starts to distort and sound even worse?
Most boxes are set up to deliver max output at around 50% on the volume dial. Some others are set up to only offer max output at 100% volume setting.
I suppose it really depends how a box sounds up to 50% volume. My 9140 I've just recapped sounds great up to 50% volume with distortion coming in over that. The thing is, it sounds bloody loud at 50% volume so I'm happy with that.

It all depends on the condition of the box and quality of the signal input. My Sharp GF9696 F that I bought brand new in 1982 sounded clean, clear and powerful with no distortion at all, but that is not the case with the one I have now. I never push any of my boombox to its limits and never went over 1/2 the volume. I don't think they are designed to play at full volume. Please correct me if I am wrong. Distortion levels have to be over 6% or so to be audible.
I never even try anything after half volume unless I want to ruin it. I don't know what models can handle playing at 3/4 volume and above without any damage. I believe JVCM70 and M90 can handle it pretty well. I doubt GF777 with the bass at max will ever handle more than 1/2 the volume. I've connected external MK speakers (150W) to Sharp VZ3500 and went over 3/4 of its volume levels with no audible distortion, but never attempted it with boomboxes. My 5000 series Denon receiver with B&W speakers (200W) can pump with no audible distortion at high volumes and I am least afraid of that because my speakers got good power handling.
Is it advisable to go over 1/2 or exceed 3/4th of the volume with boomboxes?

. A year and so ago I cannibalized around 30-40 of my junk boomers ( antennas , knobs and so on) and trashed em. Now have another pile waiting for decision 
half volume is pretty much where distortion is starting to be heard except on the the newer boomers like TDK, Kaboom and Altec Lansing and I931's. these seem to be able to handle the higher volume pretty much distortion free
