GE Beater Box - tuner?

So, I won this old GE 3-5251 a week ago or so...you know, one of the ones where the seller didn't have a single cassette in the house to test with? well, anyway good news is the cassette functions FLAWLESSLY, but strangely the radio doesn't. Now, this is probably a basic question. For most, but I get virtuAlly no signal and only crackling when Imove the tuner knob. Any thoughts? not a huge deal, but it would be nice to listen to a staton fro. Time to time...

Please discribe to others what "pots and tuner means"
Is it the cable (rope) which controls the tuner knob or the board on the main amp?
Am getting a SK-21 which is dirty, nasty and in need of a full revamp... well where do I start?
Ohh love these GE's have 3 now most work great but speakers L & R are weak, Resisters?
