part of me wants to be disgusted, and call them out for being 'urban outfitters' kitsch, and faddy, but then part of me also wants people to remember that boomboxes were actually pretty useful audio devices and that we don't need another 3w ipod dock when we really want hi-fi sound in a portable package
all my spidey senses are pointing to the boombox coming back to life, not least because i'm only 20 and want one, so therefore I must have jumped on that boombox bandwaggon at some point, but my reason for wanting one is a love for industrual design, and a love for hip hop- a time where engineers and designers had the final say to make something they were proud of, everything wasn't so disposable- and the boombox is the symbol of speach, the untold stories that were being spread and shared through hip-hop, through the boombox- a box that I might buy on ebay might well have spread a message to unsuspecting people back in 1987, that's a part of history man, a lasonic i931 doesn't have that same heritage
I'm all for boomboxes coming back, but I just want people to remember what they are about, not just some new cool thing that urban outfitters is pushing- they should make sure that every new boombox sold comes with a book all about the history of what they've just bought, and how important it is!
