No not sloppy bass :hmmm: ports are made to specific size for best results. Here is an example of what you are saying. If there is no port air has no where to go therefore it bounces around in box causing distortion!!! Also try blowing air into bottle, you can't because there is no where for it to go. Now how can a speaker move without airflow, it can't so therefore it doesn't work to its full effect and distorts :-)

The Telefunken Studio 1 has no ports, but it's got warm, flappy bass

The Aiwa TPR-950 and the GE 3-6035 both have vented backs, but the Aiwa has warm bass while the GE has tight bass.

Doesn't seem to be a pattern. Each situation is different.

there is an inherrant flaw in the design - some engineers can dial it out i guess

but sealed boxes imho in my experience sound sonically better - thats all

my funken wasn't flappy

anyways - the original question why does the 3 speaker design not need a bass port

simpe answer - the 3rd speaker makes it more efficient for bass so does not need one

There are many values to both designs - the TDK guys in this instance thought the easy route to give the 2 speaker box more bass was to add a reflex

simple

I'm sure it's also something to do with the different speakers used as well :-)

OK...here we go... :hmmm:

I have made some comment's about these radio's in the past....some of that "Negativity" revolved around the price tag and I will say AGAIN I have not heard the 3 speaker model, only the 2 speaker one.

And as strange as it is, now that the price has come done to "Gentlemen's" levels, this is starting to seem more "Friendly" to me!

...and with that said....

There is no doubt they ROCK! There are just to many member's that have them that praise them for them to be crap :-/

Yeah Chris there was no way I was paying $500 for it. But the $225 was the best price I've ever seen and believe me it sounds amazing  one other thing Jimmy called me today and told me how to update it and it really helped the unit sound more crisp and added controls on front panel for my Iphone :-). This was well worth the price

well i' got mine the other day and i freakin love it.. it doesnt have Kaboom type bass.. but it is awefully close.. it does have one thing the Kaboom doesnt.. highs.. the tweeters really add the extra details the Kaboom lacks.. the sound hits all the frequencies.. bass is great dont get me wrong.. but the JVC can go lower.. but not by much.. another interesting thing.. (btw i love messing with new boxes) the speakers on the TDK are the same size as the 2 side firing woofers on the JVC hehe.. time to experiment :-P what if i were to take the 2 coaxial drivers and put them in the JVC.. hmm.. will finally get the tweeters it needs hehe.. not sure though.. the xover on the JVC might not give me anything but low frequencies.. gonna try it using the 2 speaker boombox woofers.. so as to not blow my 3 speaker speakers.. should be quite interesting! i'll follow up in the next few weeks when i grab one of the 2 speaker units.. unless Blu-Fuzz has any extras from his parts box he would be willing to sell?

anyways gotta show off my TDK bling.. and another of the twins.. :-D

Hey Bill.. if you look on the bottom of the box it has a spot to put it on a stand on purpose.. pretty cool huh.. there's a pic on the net with it on one..

Make sure the stand pole is the right size for the hole in the TDK. The poles I found are too small.

Hey guys I've just got this one, its the tdk wireless boombox.
I really wanted a tdk box but the 3 speaker was out my budget.
So my options were the 2 speaker box or this one. I love the strap on the 2 speaker box but the bluetooth connectivety and built in rechargeable battery on the wireless box won me over, plus it was cheaper.
Sound wise I put this just a tad behind my i931 for outright volume but the quality is better. Like my i931 this can go virtually to max volume without breaking up (I say virtually as I've only had tis to about 75%), where most my old boxes I dont really wont to take past half way.
It has 2 full range drivers, 2 passive radiators and 1 sub woofer in the back of unit. It says it is 2x7w +15w, I have no idea how accurate that is but it sounds about right.
This wont be everyones thing but I really like it although I will still look out for both the other 2 speaker box and the 3 speaker box second hand.

Congrats  yeah the rechargeable battery and and wireless is a plus but doesn't seem to be as cool as 3 speaker model. I especially like the high gloss of 3 speaker over flat black... Kind of reminds me of the IPhone :-)
