OK....Update....

As you can see below.....
s4qoo4.jpg

I'm in the process of painting the 'cut' edge of the spindle boards & am now on the 2nd coat for the edges. The rest already has 2 coats on the spindle boards & 3 coats on each pillar bottom. Duckman is right, this is excellent paint that soaks right into whatever surface you want to paint but stripped & bare wood requires more coats than advertised since it is self-priming paint...

Any exterior surfaces that sees a lot of weather & wet rain & snow really demands at least 3 coats to properly form that barrier, even in crevices & areas that trap water & take longer to dry out after rain & snow. Also, anything that traps water becomes a dew-point freeze & thaw which breaks up paint & wood bit by bit so a fully sealed finish is key....

I'm going to finish off the pillar bottoms with a 4th coat which will take on the ice & snow like nothing...All other surfaces except the floor will get 4 coats of French Roast Emerald. The railing runners that hold the spindle boards, the post trim at the bottom of each post where it meets the floor & the entire upper main post section & top caps will be done next...

OK....yet more progress on the porch.

prep:

Here you can see the inside is almost fully done. The ceiling will get soffit & aluminum flashing around the top beams & corners, next year.

The floor already has 2 coats of all surface primer & 2 coats of floor paint. Once the windows are installed, I can put down 2 more coats to make it last...

Thanx guys!! :-D :-D My friends are actually busting my baullZ cuz I've pretty much disappeared for the last 8 weeks while tackling the project. I still have plenty to do but the windows look great now & I can finish painting the outside surfaces....

One thing for sure is if you have a choice of restoring old cedar vs. tearing it out & starting fresh with pine or spruce, etc. save the old wood. It lasts forever & the construction these days is not near the same quality..

Stay tuned...

Man with the Gold Finger! Everything turns into Gold!

Awesome Job!
Thanx BBL48!! There's still more to do...

I have to strip down the iron railings for the steps, paint them, spray-paint the screen door & 2-tone it....paint the solid oak door & finish the fascia. Tonight, I'm up so I'll take about 3 rolls of paper towels & some Fantastic(c) cleaner & go over the front of the siding to remove all that weather, dust, grime & marks from the sanding & decades of neglect.

I've stared at that ugly, poorly repaired, poorly painted & fully depleted porch with disgust & dismay, literally for 20 years, waiting for the day. The house was cheap & located directly in the center of the nicest neighborhood in the central city area, half a mile from downtown. We got it for a steal in '95 but the only downside is it was a real, top-to-bottom resto. candidate. I had to upgrade, plumbing, wiring, kitchen plaster & paint, full bathroom renovation, all 3 bedroom were fuil resto & paint, new roof 3 years ago & chimney repair including new chimney liner for the water heater & brand new water heater(rental)...

The house is in great shape now & all original plaster is restored to new looking again, The kitchen still could use another going over & the upstairs bathroom could use renovating but the foundation & floor pan is all original, as well as the roof rafters & frame. The plywood for the roof was replaced in the previous roof rebuild & all we had to do was replace the shingles & paper, etc.

Oh, yeah, we also had posts set & a fence installed, a patio door replaced, 4 new windows installed, 12 years ago & new siding installed over the existing cedar plank exterior. I think we did that almost 20 years ago.
& now the porch...

Some day, I'll have time to sit on my new porch & have a brew......

some day.... :bang: :bang: :bang:

Spindles SUCK BAULLS!!!! They are 3 dimensional & you can't just lay it on thick or the crisp lines of the spindles get goopy & sloppy so thin coats all the way & lots of area to cover.......I would have given up on real spindles if this porch had them. I would have replaced mine, somehow..

Almost finished 4 coats on the outfacing surfaces I couldn't do before with the plastic up. 1 coat of brown on the front door & the screen door is sprayed with Rustoleum flat white to freshen it up & make the grime & stains disappear. Once the heavy oak door is painted brown, the pure white of the screen door will contrast nicely & show off it's detailed woodwork.

Will post pics soon....

Update: Almost finished the restoration...

Well, almost done & am finishing up the details of the project. I had to repaint the screen door since it was so beat up, dirty & stained from decades of use. The 2-tone blue & white finish can be seen before I painted it....

hideous....note the scratches & faded color..

I simply painted the whole door with flat white rustoleum spray paint to freshen it up & match the windows. Twice now, I've been asked where I got my new screen door & they were shocked when I told them I painted the old one.

As you can see below, the white door, windows & freshly painted woodwork of the porch flows nicely now. I'm still touching up areas & applying the fascia or skirt to the right side of the porch when facing the front door. I'va also painted the mailbox brown to match & also the oak door will be brown as well to contrast with the white screen door.

Take a look at the progress so far...

Even the mailbox gets 2 coats...

Here, I'm measuring up & laying out the area where I can attach the house number for deliveries, etc. First, you lay down 2" masking tape to mark out your measurments without marking the surface underneath.

Thanx! Yeah, more updates:

I had my buddy come over this week & we put up the rest of the fascia & now I am putting the plank we custom cut for the top of the steps where the old fascia met the steps. I bondo'd in the edges & am ready for primer on the steps.

I'll post more pics tomorrow but take a look at today's progress...

Fascia & finish plank for the top step are set & the plank for the step is bondo'd in & ready for primer. It's about 3am here so 1st coat of primer for the plank & tomorrow the steps are next as well as bondo for the right side fascia to finish it off right.....
