ff/rw work fine. Play will not spin the tape

Trying to relive my youth and get a working replacement to my favorite toy as a youth. I have two of these now. Both seem to ff/rw fine. If I try to hit play the tape deck seems to engage, but the take up portion is not spinning at all. Both are like this. Is this the plastic issue that I have seen, not sure its the same thing? Can anyone help with this at all? Is there someone that can fix this bad boys?

Yes it is the same thing! Post was a little premature. It played two tapes and now wont disengage.....grrrr

Sounds like it needs new belts.

All aged tape decks will need general servicing at this stage, belts, pinchrollers, capstan rollers in Sharps case. Let us know what "these" are, i assume we are talking boomboxes so which make/model?
