Ever regretted opening the box?

Hi Guys,

I have just finished working on my 'ugly duckling' Hitachi TRK-9140 today. After getting some good advice here, I pulled it apart and cleaned/lubed the pots and switches and after putting everything back together all was well. The FM,MW,SW selector switch was the main cause of an intermittent lower output left channel and no left channel on AM mode. After cleaning, both channels are now operating at the same level. The volume, balance, treble and bass controls are now scratchy free too. :-D

The problem was that after reassembling everything, whilst enjoying a tune, I noticed that my over liberal use of cleaner had resulted in some excess fluid dripping slowly over my internal LED level display!! Although I didn't really want to pull it down again, I bit the bullet and completely gutted the unit so I could get access to the led panel that is behind a plexi panel. After an hours cleaning etc, I reassembled everything and hit the power button - Oh no, nothing!! This was the stage where I really did regret bothering to clean the LED display! Then I realised I had forgetten to connect the power supply wires!

Pulled the back off again and reconnected the wires. Right, great, I will just throw in 10 D cells and hey presto......... nothing!! :annoyed: Now I'm really feeling like an idiot. Due to the extensive disassembly and reassembly process, I was convinced I had snapped off some irreplaceable part at some stage! I was getting really pissed at myself at this stage. :annoyed:

Just for interests sake, I checked the batteries and realised I'd inserted one cell the wrong way around!! With fingers crossed I flipped it around, replaced the battery cover and hit the power switch............... - SUCCESS!!

Very relieved over here!!!

Anyone with a similar 'smack the forehead' experience??
James.... :-)

Below is a pre-repair photo - notice the lower levels on the left LED display caused by the dirty AM,FM,SW selector switch.

I've had my fair share of those experiences. I still do not find them enjoyable. But, it's usually something stupid I have done so I can't get upset at anything but myself. :dunce:

Congratulations on getting the Hitachi back in working order.

I think we all have forgotten to do something while putting it back together in the excitement of it working great :-/

Hi James. I know there's been a few times I've regretted what I'd seen when I opened a box up. :annoyed: A high school pal of mine had that same model back in the 80s. We used to take turns lugging around at various Track meet events we ran at. It was heavy and built like a tank. I remember thinking how High Tech I thought it was.

I've opened up every box - the M90 is the sole exception - to clean woofers & tweeters or do something basic like spray Deoxit on switches and whatnot but never completely "gutted" a box tho.

I purchased 3 boxes from one member here (now ex-member) and each time, the innards was so soaked with fluid that it was oozing out of every crack, pore and orifice. Sorta like a KFC chicken that sat on a wad of napkins. Soaked into the plastic too making it impossible for a thorough cleaning. It's almost like it was dipped into a vat. Anyhow, the worst part of it is that the fluid isn't deoxit and to this day, still not sure what it was.

I got my Sanyo 920 from this same ex member as well but was lucky to have not had that situation with fluid all over inside. But there were some wires not hooked up right :hmmm: But in this type hobby you just can't be sure of who was inside with these units being over 30 years old :-/
