Just got back from my local recycling centre or 'dump' as we always used to call them) - it's a busy place and I showed the guy a flyer (usual thing - boomboxes wanted etc) and asked him if he had any? However, the law (this is the UK) now says no domestic electrical items can be sold on and all must be recycled. I asked him if he saw many and he remarked he could retire next month if they were allowed to sell them and hundreds each week go in the skip. Maybe a bit of exagerration and no doubt lots are worthless tat but judging by the mountains of TV's I see there each week there would be some real gems - I hate to think how many desirable boxes end up gone forever and sadly out of reach...

That sucks!!! The guy is probably just trying to cover his ass. I bet he would lose his job if he were caught selling stuff.

You will need to find the boomboxes before people take them to the dump. :-D Are there any local newspapers that offer free want-ads?

I just recently contacted a recycling place local and this is the conversation:

Me:
I am actually a collector of old portable cassette radios "boomboxes" and I was wondering if there is anyway to get or buy these things from your company before they get tossed for scrap? Thank you!!!

Them:
Joe,
We do get some of these and would be happy to save some for you to look at. Are there any types, designs, brands or ages that you are more interested in?
There would be a nominal charge for any equipment purchase. Roughly $5.00 each depending on scrap value.
Thank you for your interest.

Me:
I wouldn't request that you keep only specific brands or models if the price is $5 each. I live only a few hours away, if you want to keep my information and when you have about 10 in a bunch to check out I would make a trip. That would be fantastic. Thank you for the reply, I honestly didn't think I would hear back from you!

Pretty much any portable cassette radio would be fine. Prefer ones without CD players, but I can sift through them when I come to your business.

Them:
Thanks Joe,
I will collect a bunch and give you an email with a picture of the lot and you can let me know what you would like to do. Figure about 2 weeks.

THERE IS HOPE TO SAVE THESE! KEEP TRYING

Great stuff - good luck with finding some nice boxes. Joe - that guy sounds unbelievably helpful compared to the typical employee, please let us know what you turn up!

Sadly here in the UK we get subjected to heaps of crazy EU laws. Generally the guy is pretty helpful and sells on useful stuff for a few £'s but sadly electricals are a no-no. BITD I remember as a kid you could search through old crap at the dump yourself and we used to climb over the towers of cars at the breakers yards (car scrap heaps - not sure if you guys in the US use the same terms?)

Sadly 'heath and safety' put an end to all that....

I just went to our "electronics recycling" the other day, and the sign said NO SCAVENGING.
Didn't see anything but computers and big TVs anyways...

I guess in an effort to recycle more, this is what standards have been set. But that seems harsh. No flex ability at all.

Don't know how it is up in Boston, but in my hometown in RI; the dump doesn't care. All they say is, "I don't wanna see it back here!"

Makes you wonder why'd they'd care as keeping them in circulation should be better for the environment than expending the resources to recylce the parts, plastic, metals, etc ?
