if you made the ' fair play' rules --for the ebay selling formats --
how would you treat BID RETRACTIONS ??

I think there is a such thing as "bidder's remorse"... Sometimes you get caught up in the moment and in over your head...

I've never had that problem tho!

I would say once a bid retraction is made that the seller would have the option to block any further bids from that particular bidder. I can think of at least four categories of bid retraction:

1) Honest mistake of putting in $3,800 instead of $38.00

2) Changed mind (really shouldn't happen though)

3) Snooping for the current high bid

4) Some crazy bidder just messing with you

well -- your #2 is the same as monos ' bidders remorse ' -
which is possible ....

but -- #3 is a real bummer for the seller and for the high bidder --
as its a 'legit' plot to learn the high bidders ' secret' bid

so -- what to do ?
what to do ??

I would hold them accountable for any loss to the seller.
in other words, if they brought the bid to 80$, retracted, and the final bid was75$, they would owe 5$.
The policy would encourage good behavior, and let the others sweat it out for a while.

and yes there are fringe cases that would let someone off the hook: exchange rate mistakes (the japanese person bids 78000yen at the usa site) , non-bid bids( your kid found your iphone and ordered 40$ pizza's from Chicago, quantity 100), and decimal mixups(more common in America, where people can graduate from high school without being able to read).
new graduate:
"how many languages do you speak?"
"zero, I'm an American."

You forgot ....

5. :dunce:  :weed: :weed:

So one night I'm looking at some vintage headphones,, narrowed it down to two sales and then had a few other auctions opened. When I finally did bid, I bid on the wrong auction AND WON!

Some crappy arse old 70's public school headphones for hearing tests or something. CRAP! Worst $15 I ever spent! :annoyed: :bang:

yup chris -- that happens :-)

agree with resto --there should be some kind of penalty :hmmm:
for a non-typo retraction

Ok here is one just happened to me. Partially my fault. I was watching a gold Lasonic I931 with a starting bid of $350 one night. The description pretty much said very good condition with only a couple small scratches. Real crappy pics and description. Any way I took my meds with sleep aide and was still on IPhone looking before I fell asleep. Next day while looking at email I noticed I put bid on I931 gold bbx... I immediately emailed guy to ask for more and better pictures especially scratches. He sent pics and holy crap it's like this newer bbx had gone to war. Deep Scratches everywhere and the front corner was nicked. I sent guy a message asking if I could either withdraw my bid or if he would sell it to me cheaper with buy it now because of all the scratches and nicks... He sent back that I could just withdraw bid because he was selling for friend and knew they could get that amount. Well since then he has relisted for less and still has had no sale :-O I felt bad but at same time didn't want to spend that much when I could buy an I931 brand new and paint it gold
