ebay news .. for real ?

I haven't seen that one before but if it doesn't carry the account holder's details, then it's spoof. There's no official notification in the UK's eBay sites, only a very small banner that advises members of the security breach and of course spoofs like this one, received here and ignored as it doesn't address me by name, user name or any other identifying factor:

Hi Beo - that link I posted was clicked through from the orange flag banner labelled "PASSWORD UPDATE" (their capitals, not mine) that appears in the top banner of the www.ebay.co.uk page ... so it looks to be the official route advised by eBay UK now ... maybe only a recent change but looks legit, as long as you change your password through the official eBay site and not through any spoof phishing email links or spoof blog links etc. then (in theory) all should be OK

The worst possible time to be changing your password or entering into any other sort of account activity in a web venue whose security has an ongoing and unsolved breach is when they send you email asking you to do this. I change passwords every so often for all of the sites I use but doing so when there's an ongoing possibility of someone watching everything that members do - including keystrokes while on that site - is asking for trouble as this sort of hack targets activity. Don't feed the bad guys' lust for information that is useful to them and they'll go elsewhere. I still haven't changed my password and won't be doing so until I know for sure that the leak is plugged once and for all.

I have a hard time believing much untoward action can occur from this if you're an active eBay used who's constantly signed in and pays attention to what's going on with your account.

I think the people most at risk here are those (and there are thousands of them) who've made accounts on eBay and they haven't touched them for a long time. Inactive accounts on the internet with personal information in them are the treasure a lot of these guys go after.

I agree with Rick on this one. So people just be careful and close any accounts no longer in use.
