Does Anyone Get a Sick feeling On Yahoo Auction Japan?

Have any of you guys found a better page to translate from Japanese to English then the ones provided by Jauce? I feel like between the 3 different translations I get an OK understanding of the condition of the box, but I'm not sure. I really want to make sure that I understand the condition of the radio before I send off any large sum of money....

Therein lies the big issue with yahoo.jp. It's not the finding or buying the item, it's the condition.
I've bought about 100 things in total off yahoo through my friend when he was there, about 15 blasters and the rest was cassettes, video games and toys.

In my experience very, very few radio auctions have what I'd call anything close to an accurate description. 99% of the real bargains on there are complete crapshoots as the sellers are famous for simply saying it's dirty junk. Asking questions is pointless unless you're fluent in japanese.

The risk on yahoo is massive. I got lucky and only got one radio that wasn't in a condition I could salvage, that's now being used for parts. But parts isn't going to recoup the $100 I spent on the radio pluse the $250 to get it here. It's not a fair game on yahoo and you've got NO recourse for refunds or complaints like on ebay.
Jauce is rife with buyer-beware disclaimers and theres nothing like paypal over there either.

Even if you know japanese and live there, as my friend did, the risk of getting a radio in below expected condition is something you have to be prepared for.
Ebay is like buying manufacturer direct compared to yahoo for radios, so be aware that luck (or blasterkarma!) plays a massive role.

I wish everyone who uses yahoo or jauce the best of luck, I'm not trying to talk people out of using it, but for those of us who are plonking down big money on a personal grail and then larger money for the shipping you need be prepared for things to go pear shaped and that you'll just have to sit there and take it.

Rock On.

thanks rick---for the explanation and the warnings-

i have never ventured into all that risk --

but --if there ever was a 'ONCE-in-a-lifetime' object for sale there-
i would -as a last resort --go for it

I'm very glad Rick pointed out all the issues with trading on Yahoo.jp. There is a very good reason why it's not done more often.

It seems every now and then, someone will post up how cheap something on Yahoo.jp is giving the perception that yahoo.jp is a great shopping ground for cheap boomboxes. That's only part of the whole story. Keep in mind that there are fees. Lots of fees. Your $10 radio could eventually become a $300 purchase. And if it comes shattered, not working, missing parts, etc. etc..... doesn't matter -- your bought it and it's now yours. How many purchases total will it take to compensate for the bad ones. The risk is not insignificant and not for the faint of heart. Make sure you have the stomache for this type of transaction and can afford to throw money away. For example, jauce is frequenty cited as a proxy. So when you fund your account with play money via paypal to the jauce system, paypal will give you a punitive 2%-3% hit on the conversion rate, just for fun. Then when the funds in jauce are used, you are assessed a bank fee. Then when you win an item, you are charged 800 yen PLUS 8% commission. Then you need to pay for the item. Then there is the cost of the domestic shipping from the seller to jauce. Then there is the repacking fee, which is either 1200 yen or 2400 yen. Then there is the overseas shipping cost to your destination, could run anywhere from $120usd to $260usd depending upon what you bought. Even the smallest boombox could run well over $100 shipping. Of course sea shipping is an option if you want, but then repacking isn't an option and they will charge you an additional handling FEE of 250yen per kg of product weight. An RX-7700 would weigh in at a whopping 15kg packed which adds an additional 3750 yen handling fee in addition to the normal sea shipping charge. In case you are wondering, $1 only buys you about 72-75 yen nowadays but you need to factor in your "after-tax" purchasing power since remember, paypal already punished you with the poorer than normal conversion rate to begin with.

So how much are the fees? Just read through the list above yourself and calculate -- I get a headache just looking at the fees list. Don't believe all those fees? Just go the jauce yourself and read the faq's. It's all in there.

All of this talk about risk and fees and the possibility of damage is a lot to take in, Also I have been reading with the translations of the auction descriptions and They all seem to say the same thing i.e. "junk, no returns, no claims, etc."

I think I am just going to stick with finding the boxes in the wild or at least in the US, for me.

I guess Now all I can do is window shop some of the fancy Japanese models

It's true there are many models over there that you can't find in the US.............BUT, many others are just re-badged versions of ones you CAN get here, with slightly different styling and Japanese language on the controls........ And that isn't really special IMO. Not only that, but they are usually 100V only, which means that if you want to use them frequently, you should ideally buy a step-down voltage converter.

Yes, I can confirm that alot may be "lost in translation"!
I got one box with the rusted remains of D batts wen the description said good batt compartment.
As these items are sold as "junk" little responsibility is taken for accurate descriptions.
I don't need to rely on translator programs and still hesitant to believe what I read.
But at the end of the day you pays your money and takes the chance.
