Damn turntable lag

So my vz-2000 turntable worked great for a couple hours. Then she started to slow down. I had to flip it on to 45 for it to sound right on an LP. Is that most likely motor issues? Brushes or some such?

there's two speed control screws on the turntable pcb you can adjust the motor speed from there .

Oh damn, nice tip. I haven't seen that issue yet with my working ones but have 2 others needing belts replaced and we'll see how they're doing then speed wise. Might've just saved me a headache if I do have that issue. Thanks. I do have the actual paper schematic that came with it too, of course that only makes sense to my brother.

But now when it first starts it plays perfect speed. Then after 5-10 min she starts slowing down. I don't think just speeding the thing up is the answer...

Could also be a slipping belt or one that's to tight causing motor drag

I got one doing the same thing Has brand new belts on it Turn table and tone arm belts are new

the tone arm drive belt cannot be tight at all or it will bind up , it does not take much force to move the tonearm pulley and it binds up if the belt is new it must still be kinda loose to work right . i put the loosest fitting belt i could find on mine and it's been working great ever since .

i even got brave and tried another belt which was a bit tighter , no luck . the looser belt worked and still does .

Interesting....The belt I have is the 4.0. I actually ordered that from a record store ad they ordered it out of a catalog as a direct replacement

But it is tight!

Here's my issue

At first, it played the turn table fast, so I slowed it down....then I ended up with this problem

I did think that it could be the town arm and cleaned the gears REALLY good, but no change

maybe capacitors are used up, try tapping them a little it might change the speed which means they dry of or something and dont hold their specs anymore

Maybe belt is still to tight Chris. Try stretching it a bit. If its to tight it will cause problems!!!!

It's strange, because it will start out playing well and after 5-10 seconds it starts to slow

I have tried stretching them, but seemed to have no difference.

Motor might be going out or needs a cleaning. If feelers are dirty in motor it can act just like pot/switch or slider that's dirty. Or the adjustable resistors for speed control may also be bad. I'm not sure if motor can come apart but it's a possibility

Deoxit'd motor and speed adjusters. Motor spins freely.

I sprayed it and also blew it out with a compressor, more than anything to get any debris that may have been there out.

That may be the next step, to pull it all the way down. Hopefully Norm will be able to determine the problem. I might even take the little motor down to a motor rewinding shop and have it fixed, should that be the problem

So I swapped the motor in mine with another 30 year old motor today. Tried it out with a 7" first up because it used to play ok for quite a while at 33rpm before it slowed down but on 45 it would slow pretty much straight away. It didn't slow down straight away but instead got quite erratic, sometimes slowing a bit and then speeding up even faster than it should. Now playing an LP and halfway through the B side it has started doing the same thing, slow then fast. The main turntable drive belt is new but did seem a little tight. These motors don't really look like they're supposed to come apart, reckon anyone can service em?

Is there such a shop? I suppose that sounds like the way to go, mine's definitely made a difference with a different motor but just not all that much better.

These do come apart but you must be careful as there's a board inside and can crack. Most Likely the issue is with the components on board. Parts may be replaceable but very difficult...the bad thing is there is probably no new replacement as this is a 6 pin motor.

If your belt Feels tight then that definitely could be an issue. Tightness causes drag and can damage parts.

So my belts arrived for the second VZ and I put the motor from the first one in there. It seems to play fine without slowing at all (except there is a bad connection on side B ). Something else is going on. I'll give the speed adjustment switches a clean and see how that goes.
