CROWN-850 restoration project

Hi all,

this 850 is laying around like forever and I want to get a start in restauration as all my other projects are a little bit stucked ( waiting for the parts to arrive).
I love the 850 by it's look and superb deep sound quality and this one really deserves a lifting

The box is in full working state but has some sprinkle coloured white dots all over and on the upper front the colour is a little bit vanished.

I decided to paint the whole box in champagne/gold incl. the backcase with silver grills Also thought of red but then I thought it would look a little cheap and the speaker should then also be painted which I want to avoid.

Firts step was to detach everything that is detachable from the front case.

I have two questions concerning my resto

1) anyone got a good advice how to remove the sprinkles? ( it's permanent paint) I tried to remove the dots with a wooden piece but that will cost too much time and nerves :annoyed:

2) anyone got experience with removing the aluminium mic plates (first pic)? as I want to paint everything that is black now in gold ( it seems as if it is glued but I don't want to mess it up by just trying)

hey, the white dots are house paint, soak the case in warm water for a half hour and then carefully remove the dots with your thumbnail. they should come off a treat.
This box looks lovely already. It will look great champagne! But in my opinion I would leave the black as it is.

Hey ledmeter,

thanks for the great advice. I will try that.
Do you really think Just looked at my 980 and saw that there the black parts on the mic are also kept black, so yes you are right I will keep them black - also less work for me

What do you guys think of painting the back panel also in champagne - will be a upgrade to that box - or not?

This should look beautiful when complete...My experince with the paint specs is to soak in hot water just what ledmeter said as far as the black and the tweeter grills if they can be remover it will make for easier paint job ....if not use a fineline tape to mask.....take your time and im shure it will look great

Also, don't forget -> Drying is almost as essential as the washing!

Water will be pooled in every screw hole of the case and as far as my experiences go never dries out of there on its own. I usually give it a good air blast from the compressor to force out the stubborn water from those places. Then in the winter if I'm lucky to have a fire I just sit the boombox in front of the blower motor (not too close to melt..) and that dries it up nicely eventually. Sometimes I even have to hit it with a compressor a second time as the water just doesn't dry out from those small screw post holes.

You don't want water in there, if you've ever had to dig out a rusty screw from a box....well, there you go.

so so clean now, the hot water-method worked out. And I found out that I had a unknown housemate that fortunately my wife didn't see

you see, today I had a lot of spare time but it will be wuite a long time gone till the painting will be done and I can present more pics and efforts.

Excellent work! I think the back painted champagne would look great but it's a lot of work to make it look nice when you consider factory plates and battery cover etc; so just do it if you really want to.
Once you have finished painting (after, NEVER before ) you should use some liquid silicon tyre dressing to bring out the lustre of the brushed metal top, it will work a treat.

what is this in german? : liquid silicon tyre dressing. Is ther another name for it? Or could you place a link. I was thinking of replacing that metal top because it will be the most awfull part of the whole box, but it will be hard to get one in good shape. thanks for the helpfulla dvice ledmeter.

You might just be able to go into a local bodyworks or dealership mechanics and ask for a little bit. You only need to use a tiny amount. Don't replace things like trims. It only serves to waste precious original parts. Best to just make what you already have the best possible.

have to think of it, to me the black looks way more cheap on the 850.....
