I've been wanting a HiFi rig for some time but space was always an issue. Now that I moved I have the space for it.
So a few days ago I bought some Pioneer speakers from Goodwill for half off. It was too good of a deal to pass up, so I pulled the trigger. Now I needed a receiver.
I checked around all the vintage electronic spots around Toledo and I found a Pioneer SX 650 at Allied Records, a buy, sell trade music shop by my house, but the owner was reluctant to sell because it was the in store tester. :annoyed:
While talking to the boss at work he told me he had an old hifi in his bassment that he hadn't used in 15-20 years. As luck would have it, he brought it in and gave it me. It's a like new Technics SA 5560 from 1976, 85 wpc and solid construction! The sound is so beautifull and powerfull. They will easily blow away the Pioneer CS-G201 speakers I have, but I still have my eyes open for a Pioneer SX series receiver.
Here's some crappy cell phone pics,
Enjoy!
Paul Z.

Not bad at all!!! I'd spen the money on better speakers. The Technics of that era could match almost anything out there at the time for half the cost. Nice find indeed!

Yeah, right now I'm looking for other matching components (cassette deck and EQ) and I'll probably sell it to one of my buddies latter on. But its better than nothing!
I need to get my hands a Pioneer SX950 or 980.
I just met a dude who had one of the most fantastic pioneer rigs ever! all the spec sh!t 1250 receiver, reel to reel, pre amp, amp ,EQ, 2 cassette decks, 8 track, reverb, down to the, made in england HPM funky speakers I almost jizzed in my pants when I saw that! :w00t:

Don't know what you have but I'm always open to offers of a fair and reasonable nature MZ. If serious, send me a PM.

However, just understand that the SX-1980 is my crown jewell and I've got like 20 stereo receivers including 3 Marantz 2500's. If you want the best in a man's collection, you've got to offer something good in return, right?

This is a SX-1980. Can't get to mine right now cause it's buried...deep.

Very cool Technics, I had a low line version back in the day. The specs weren't the best but it sure sounded good to me.

Yeah. Actually, that Pioneer was the top of the line and pumped out 270watts x 2 into 8 ohms. The specs was just fantastic. Most separate power amps wouldn't even pump out that much. In fact, the venerable Spec 2 amp was only rated at 250wpc rms. The tuner was amongst the best and rivaled tuner separates. In fact, the tuner has a way cool PLL circuitry. Hardly anyone knows about it but basically, when you tune the machine, the PLL is off. As soon as you find the station you want and let go of the tuning knob, the PLL (phase lock looped) circuitry engages and locks the tuner at that station.

And yeah, it IS a beast as it's about 80-90 lbs packed.

wow... just what I wanted to hear.

Seriously, before I got into the portable stuff, I was collecting stuff like this. Got way overloaded and they were too big to haul around and play with. Now, in my aging years, I find that I can enjoy the portable stuff more because they are a whole lot easier to rotate and enjoy than these behemoths. Only problem is... I never got rid of the other stuff either :w00t:

And so it begins.........the search for the "right" speakers. I just picked up some better speakers off CL, but they will need some work. I got some amazing KLH 355 Barons. Apparently the design is very similar to the Infinity speakers of the same era, and thats a good thing! I will need to re-foam the woofers but it looks a pretty straight forward procedure. and man, these things are super built, it oozes quality with the heft to match.
It has solid walnut cabinets and glass tops it's a 3 way system with crossover controls for the highs and midrange. Once these are all squared away I suspect I could get a pretty good resale value.
My plan is to have these re-foamed by next week. I have a couple of components finding their way to me as well. I'll post more as things come together.
Peace,
Paul Z.
