here the story --
4 days ago --good guy jaetee spotted a great ebay deal on a 10 year old Sony # DSC- S75
3 meg job --came with 2 big batteries and a 128MB stick

up till then - i had been using an OLDER 1/3 meg POS with a floppy disc output :'-(
----------------------------

so now that i am within a decade of being hip//totl

have some questions --

the menu has standard and fine quality choices-
--is there ever any reason to choose standard
like --what for ??

and there are several size choices --
these i am posting are at the fine setting and at the 1280 x 960 size -
and there are many larger upgrades from that --

do you guys use the bigger sizes to sell boxes ( ebay )
or to post them here ??

it was a dark day - inside and ouside -
i use the 'auto' mode for everything and no tripod

--- these first try shots do not look all that sharp to me --
surely not more than twice the resolution i got with my old POS
1/3 megger --
but - yes - alot better

anyway --asking how to get the best resolution -
without overloading the memory stick - the battery - this site
and peoples emails with TOO MANY PIXELS

Glad to hear you got a better camera, Ira.

No reason to choose standard quality if the camera has a high quality setting. Why they would give such options.....who knows.

When I take pics to post or sell items I always select the highest quality/resolution the camera has to offer - then I just size down the picture on the computi. By selecting the highest quality you are capturing all that the camera has to offer making your pictures better, then you can adjust the picture size to suit your needs.....like posting here. With a 3 mp camera you should have no problem with storage.

Auto setting should serve you well. Perhaps play with the macro setting on the camera also for close-up shots.

That Miller picture I would say it your best shot. Don't be afraid to get up close to your subject, especially inanimate objects. And no harm in using a tripod, your subjects are not going anywhere, so you should be able to get the best possible 'steady' shot using a tripod.

Congrats Ira . Im setting for just "posting" pictures on 0.3 MP and for more good pictures on 1.3MP. More pix's for web use is pointless IMO. If somebody wants better pics you can boost it but the file is goin to be massive. My weapon of choice is always some "bridge" camera - best from both worlds . Great pictures.

Great that you got another camera. For online posting, standard resolution is fine. It's not the resolution, it's the clarity. Your old camera had poor iso and was fuzzy. These are better. For me, I shoot at the highest quality and resize them using free software. It's important to archive using the best quality but like I said, if all you need is to post on eBay and forums, then standard is fine. If too large, it only sucks up bandwidth anyhow.

like at the standard setting -- is 1280 x 960 -- about the same quality result as
using the fine setting at 640 x 480 ??

No. Resolution is whatever it says it is. Fine and standard usually refers to level of compression so use fine = less compression.

That Sony DSC-S75 (3.3 MP with a more saturated color look) and the DSC-S85 (4.1 MP with more neutral look) are some amazing little cameras. They have a substantially well-made and very sharp f:2.0 Carl Zeiss design lens. One of these days, these will be modern day classics.

Negatives: They only take the older, 1st Gen. Memory Sticks (that max out at 128MB) and they do not have image stabilization.

Positives: These cameras can be had with a card, instructions and AC power charger for under $50. And you can shoot fully manual and control everything. These are good P&S cameras for Digital SLR shooters who don't always use the Auto settings.

I recommended to Ira because I knew he doesn't mind old school, as long as it's quality and performs. For that matter, none of us here do or we wouldn't be so into boomboxes.

Anyway, Ira... Enjoy the camera...

Oh, and I highly recommend Google's free Picassa image management and manipulation software: I use it on all of my PCs and absolutely love it!
