Which boomboxes creak, crack, flex, moan and threaten to break apart when they are picked up?

I know to be careful when moving my boxes around not to bump into things, set them down gently on tough surfaces, etc...but today I was alarmed when I picked up my sears 2199. It made such a bunch of creaky/flexing crackle noises it was scary. I have made a serious mental note to be wayyy more careful with this particular box in the future, cause you can just tell its going to snap one day. It's not a shorter handle, and no battery's currently in it either..

I'm going to have to say though that the Heavy and big Sharp 5p37g with that puny little handle that spans the width of the box is worse than the sears. I always grab and lift it 2 handed period.

More importantly, how are you going to fix it so it doesn't break..?

Side note: a couple days ago I was working outside, had the JVC 550 bumpin the tunes.. I accidentally bumped it, and since it was on an uneven surface it fell flat on its back! Still playin music no problem! My first time "dropping a radio", luckily they are built like a tank..

Some minis have long skinny handles that bend when u pick em up, and Super Jumbos might make some creaky noises when hoisted on your shoulder..

Most Lasonics, really. I had a bracket on my 975's handle snap while carrying it back from work.. Every since then made up a metal bracketed handle for my Lasonics that I swap in and out when it's their turn to be carried.

It's a shame that most big boxes that really want to be carried have handles that can't bear their weight properly due to cheaping out on the brackets. As a rule, any plastic 'L' shaped bracket can easily develop hairline cracks and snap. the more solid the bracket; the more you can trust it. But you never know what condition the plastic is beneath the chrome, so it's always going to be a risk. Switching out the brackets with metal ones is the best idea and also never, EVER, move your arm past vertical when walking or carrying your boombox. As soon as the raise your radio up on an angle when being carried by the handle it multiplies the stress on the lower handle bracket, bad things are sure to follow.

Can you show us a pic of how this works please Rick? I'm having a little trouble envisioning it.

Oh, it's just the metal brackets off a different radio that have been drilled out to fit the standard Lasonic plastic housing pieces in the case while using the same handle piece.

I have a couple of handles I've made up for this purpose, I find the handles of midsize mid 70s radios that may not be anything special will usually have very solid brackets you can use. It's a bit of a pain sometimes making everything fit, but well worth it if you carry a lot.

Really, one of the best ways to bypass this problem (that I have found) is to use the Blu_Fuz Universal Strap with the handle end wraps. They wrap around the end of the hand L brackets and all the weight goes straight to the box, not the handle. I have many radio's that make me nervous, but with this strap, NOTHING! Even the big Lasonics....no...ESPECIALLY the big Lasonics!
