Im moving back to Chicago from Texas on a plane and i REALLY need to know if i can bring my boombox on. I dont wanna put it in my suitcase but if i have to i would. Or bring it on as a carry-on(i'd rather do). I jus dont know if i can and dont want to find out when i get there. HAS ANY ONE BROUGHT THEIR BOX WITH THEM ON A PLANE!?!?!

I have . It was a cheap Clatronic Super Jumbo (cheaper aka of this) from Germany to Bulgaria. It was cool when they screened it I could see the insides of the boombox  Then they got a few extra tools to check it for about 10 minutes or so but as I had no plutonium batteries it was okay. I had to remove the batteries from the boombox though.
The Bulgarian guys didn't bother much when I flew back :-D

But you should call the airport and ask.

It would get beat up unless you wrapped a blanket around it.

Shipping it is a better idea, in my opinion. Way less hassle.

I took a Conion C100 with me from Florida to Ohio. I double boxed it and checked it as luggage, with a **** load of fragile stickers and warnings plastered all over it. I saw it loaded on the lane ant it was one of the last items, soI know it didnt get squished by a lot of luggage. I was freaking out though!
Made it home just fine. :-)

I guess it all depends on the box size, if its a small to mid sized, I dont think there would be a problem. bigger ones, would be hard to stow.
I think Lasonic hasone of those messenger style bags for blaster transport. Might be an option. :hmmm:

If it's a grail or personal fav....I'd probably inquire about it being brought on board as carry on after a security inspection. (This may not happen in our post 9/11 world but worth a try.

If not and you're still determined wrap the bejesus out of it and stuff it in a rigid suitcase.

If it's not a "near and dear" unit I'd follow Reli's advice and ship it with insurance. Lately these couriers seem to think FRAGILE means "launch over 10 foot fence" :nonono: :nonono: :nonono:

I carried my Lasonic 931 when I bought it new in 86. I couldn't/ wouldn't put in the overhead storage bin and it wouldn't fit under my seat. The flight attendant stored it in their personal little area in the rear (with the lunch cart). BUT, that was way back then and pre 911 era. I'm with 'Reli' on this one. Pack it safe and ship it. That way if your plane crashes, at least your radio makes it to your destination. :w00t: :-P Just kidding man. I do wish you and your radio safest of travels. :smooch:

Sorry for the :spam: but when you where in Bulgaria. And why i dont know :w00t:
I flew with one Elephant popin up from my back pack like cabin luggage and got no problems at all. The flight was Berlin-Sofia. For check in huge blaster im usin a soft flight case for DJ players-mixer and some of my clothes are goin for extra padding. I think good soft DJ case can be found for fair amount of cash and is perfect for checking in some huge blaster. Worked for me twice  .

I flew from Norway with an Akai AJ-530FS via Qatar to Bangkok. I brought it with me as carry on, a couple shorter discussions but I wasn´t hassled too badly  I didn´t have to worry about bringing it back though... Got completely fried by a wave

This doesn't apply, but just for sh*ts & grins I'll include it.

In 1979 I brought my Sharp GF 9090 back from Italy to Seattle as carry on. It was big for it's time.

Even got to play it onboard. I was a hit, 'cause the in-flight movie sucked and I had all the latest jams. :dj-party:

Just sayin'.

The good-ol days, pre-911.

In my personal experience I have put a radio in checked luggage wrapped securely in my clothes. The only issue was the 10 D cell batteries in my luggage. They made me open up my bag to see those were packaged correctly. Since they were out of the original packing, you have to put tape over both ends so they don't short out in flight, which I had done.
