Theres always a risk associated with carrying a box around. As somone who does this on a daily basis with very large boxes I always have the worst case scenario situation flash through my mind when I leave the house. Accidentally banging it against something and cracking the case, battery failure on the go or worse component failure on the go, but I experienced something worse than this on the way home from work today.

About a quarter of the way home carrying my Lasonic TRC-975, enjoying a tune, and comtemplating the rather rough day at work and looking forward to the weekend BANG. The handle snaps. CRASH within a second batteries are all over the pavement and the power cable's hanging out like some appalling crime scene. I'm standing there with the handle in my hand shocked to the core.

Going into damage control I get all the batteries together and stow them in my backpack along with the now separated handle. Luckily this wasn't a busy time of day and I was the only one on the street, so I carefully put the battery cover back on her and made sure everything was picked up. I picked up the 975 and heard a sickening plastic rattle inside... I hastily put her under my arm and walked home,.. in silence.

I was grateful to not see anyone I knew on the way home and managed to get home without further humiliation. I'll take the radio apart and surmise the damage tomorrow, I'm pretty sure I have a spare set of metal handle brackets that will fit, so I'll replace them and see from there.

This nightmarish experience certainly isn't going to stop me carrying.. but I'm going to be far more careful with the radios I choose to take to work and plastic bracketed handles are now entirely off limits.

Let this be a cautionary tale for those out in the wild, blasting as they should, that it only takes one second for things to go horribly wrong.

Rock On.

I am SO sorry to read this :sadno:
I also only carry radios of which I know how the handle is mounted...for exmaple the C100 where it is mounted right on all the guts or the M70 where 4 strong screws and metal brackets hold it in the housing.
You know, that is actually the reason why I NEVER took out the Discolite or the Masterblaster yet  . I am too scared and apparently it was a good thing to not carry them around :-/ .
Damn, I feel with you but form what I read, the case seems to be okay  . So it should be rather easy for you to fix the problem ;-)
Good luck!

glue........ YOU are cool -- no matter what
-------------------------

here is a solution to this crappy plastic handle brackets :
a 2" wide strap around the entire box--
custom size and colors and buckles

I hate to hear stories like that. However, if anyone can repair it, it's Rick. ;)

That S--ks so bad Rick... I know how much you love to carry these!! I just can't believe it just snapped. I'm almost certain my 975 has metal ends. I can't look now, but when I return home I will... I had this experience when I was a teen carrying my CEC around when handle broke and box fell to ground and shattered!!! I too was devastated.. The handle ends on my CEC are plastic for sure.. Oddly enough all the AKA's have metal ones.. Hope you get her fixed up!!!

sorry to hear this , i have a spare 935 handle with risers if nothing else pops up , i wanted to keep it but if no other one is found i'll let you have the parts you need , keep in mind the handle i have has plastic risers not the thin metal ones .

i think i have a spare 931 transformer if that would help.

:'-( :'-( :'-(

Been there, felt that...

There I was, 14 years old, Bremerhaven, Germany, 1980... and I'm running down the street trying to catch a bus, with my GF-9292 in tow, blasting some Rick James... the inside connection where the handle is ancorhed snapped.

10 D-cells, my box and my pride were instantly dumped out on the ground and on display for about 10 random strangers. Two of them helped me gather up my batteries... And at least nobody laughed...

I should have known better than to run with it.

I did end up putting it back together so it didn't "look" broken, and it did hold up okay for another decade after that, but I did end up throwing it away because I thought I'd never find another back to fix it. Ironically enough, right now I have a spare back and handle for GF-9191 or GF-9292 in my garage. :-/

Good luck with the fix, Glu! You didn't deserve to have that happen to you...
