well its taken 18 years to finally find one of these,my quest began when i was 17 and wanted my own-funded ghettoblaster (instead of the parents purchases prior to this due to being a skint schoolkid  )and i dreamed of this panasonic, only for money to still beat me and i got an rx ds20 instead.....no bad thing but not a patch on this leviathon!021220112116-1.jpgplease bear in mind this one isnt my actual one but a borrowed pic, alas mine is very beaten up,going to need lots of love and attention, but for 40 quid my quest is finally over and lets not forget it fully works :-D
want to know how i got it?ok!
was out with a mate of mine in bradford on sunday afternoon and he said he knew of a second hand shop with old electronics piled up everywhere-and we could call in and take a look :w00t:
well, youve never seen nothing like it.....electric decks and stereo components piled up everywhere-all sorts of gadgets, old and new,but no boxes apparent straight away :hmmm: but hang on,whats that high up on the shelf up there.......a panasonic rx ct990!!!!!well i almost **** myself and asked the owner how much?he said he wasnt sure if he wanted to sell it as a friend gave him it and was intending to keep it,but everything has a price so told me it would have to be £40 regardless of its condition :-) i just said, not thinking that i didnt have 40 quid, that id have it and didnt care about its condition lol.
rushed out to tell my mate and he gave me 40 quid and a promise to him that my hitachi w1e walkman box was his!!!!!
getting home i realised just how good this monster is  the sound is to die for.....eats ANYTHING from the silver era,and i mean that-so much bass even i didnt know what to do with it all!
so what do you guys think of this model?got any stories to share about your ct990/dt680?

Congrats mate :)

It would have to sound the absolute nuts to persuade me to buy a 90's box as I'm pretty much stuck in 1979 to 1981 as my era of choice! ;)

Congrats on a much wanted good sounding find :)

thanks guys :-D ,im sure i recall the price for the ct990 in the then dixons at pontefract being £599.99,but as a spotty 17 year old who had just started out at toyota and didnt want finance i was limited to a £199.99 ds20 instead!and si these really do sound the dogs twitcher,i promise you that, they can take high volumes just fine too,and if you spot one at a boot sale or your local second hand shop, dont miss out,get yourself it,paint it silver and live with its looks because trust me,its cool to have a good 90s box in your collection as a contrast to the golden era boxes ;-)

Don't get me wrong I wouldn't walk away from it if it was cheap at a car boot and if it sounds as good as you say it'd likely stay with me...I'd just have to hide it around the back of the sofa lol

Totally. I've had a few from the very similar DT-Series and they POUND. I even shipped one to my Mom in FL to keep on the patio. She and her husband love it. You should not be disappointed. :-D

I've got a couple of DT-680s and they do pound. The sound is so biased towards bass, you have to deliberately turn the bass down to make it sound like a 70s box!

I'm a big fan of the deep bass the dt680s emit. And u really can max out all the controls with little distortion. Amazing boxes. It even picks up certain bass frequencies the kaboom doesn't pick up.

I bought a dt690 new in around 1992, and have always been blown away by it.. Bought a dt680 a few years ago, and am working on it now, adding a stereo line-in. Love them both.

I have a DT-680 with the remote. I had one when they were released in '93 and they are the best of a dying era. These made the JVC Hyper Bass series sound like (excrement here). And the relative (for their time) build quality of the upper end Platinum series was good.

Congrats on your find! :-D

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!
You can Feel "platinum" now and only you know it.The Retro people will always hate it as it fall in the 90s(less chrome -No funky leds).
The 4.5 inchers really pound and you have to get a badly recorded song to make it distort. There are some people who say any thing under 8 inches cannot produce bass.let them hear it.
I have one(RX-CT 995) which i acquired 18 years after i heard it at a friend in 95.Got it cheap for 30$ .When i cleaned the speakers i found 20 candy wrappers in one and only 3-4 in other speaker cabinet :hmmm:? kids vs bass port .Love the S-Xbs, always on full. But if you are on batteries put it down as it will last a month longer on general usage.
Does anybody knows if this is the last one (RX-CT 995) of the series or was there a RX-CT/DT 1000  ?

thanks for all the great comments guys, really appreciate it! :-D well ive had it on none stop and this baby never, ever tires-it makes all kinds of radio shows sound awesome, wether they be commentry or music.the decks are simply brilliant, all that tech packed into lets be honest a massive unit, and again, any type of tape plays brilliantly through it ;-) ive cleaned her up somewhat but still a long way to go,but nevertheless she commands pride of place, and wether i find myself another m70 or gf777 in the future,my ct990 will always be top of the tree :-) :dj-party:
