Plugged it in and it sounds amazing. Deep bass I'm kind of surprised actually. I'll have to get my 720 and 920 out of deep storage and give it a proper assessment. Give me some time and I'll do a proper write-up with youtube vid etc. Slightly scratchy controls but better than most in this dirty shape.

The Good:
Sounds amazing, battery compartment CLEAN. The lack of pics and no mention of this in said ebay add is most of the reason for my offer and not outright purchase. Totally lucked out. Radio works great tunes in perfect, phono-in works. haven't tested cassette kind of scared to

The BAD:
Missing loudness knob and another knob similar style is incorrect. Looks to be the same as other x*20 models. SMELLS LIKE PISS. Literally. I don't think its cat pee smell either. Its going to need a full treatment which sucks because I am not very good at detail work and don't want to fark it up. Help?!?!
Line-in doesn't appear to work. and the function switch only mentions tape/radio/phono. and on reverse side doesn't have line-in/phono switch but it does have in jacks. Maybe cassette record only? :hmmm:

Thanks for all the good wishes guys. Because I don't have a huge budget my nice but meager collection has come from a dedication of nearly a decade of hunting and luck. This perhaps being my shining moment. I hope that everyone gets to experience a score that rattles your nerves but pays off in the end.

More later..

interested in the dimensions of this radio , looks to be a hair bigger than a trc 920?.

i think i did read somewhere that the line in only works in REC mode.

do the VU meters light up?
and how big are the speakers on it? they look about 6" to me
and does the LCD readout work on AM too

the guy should have packed it better then that lucky you where close.
I don't think it would have made it to MD
almost every time i buy something from ebay it has poor packing and somethings always damaged
just like the PH 470 i got. no external damage but was doa when i received it. turns out it was a loose connector & the timer switch has a loose or dirty connection.

The earlier model Sanyo M9998 has the same function setup but the line in works on tape mode without the involvement of the deck.

If that doesn't work, then you'll be stuck putting the deck into record mode - sucks though as it would be a great line in box.

James.... :-)

Great box. I assume there are a couple of versions. This one without the 'wood effect'. The missing toggle switch looks 920ish so Icemelon who is always breaking Sanyo's might have one. The tricky bit in cleaning this one will be getting behind the speaker grilles.

You must be very pleased with the score.

I'll have to try the line-in with rec later. Quick test and VU meters don't light up, speakers are 6 or 6.5, LCD works in FM or AM mode.

Yep this is 824 the 820 is the woodgrain variety I think?
Just checked and the 920 knobs are a hair smaller. Fits fine and you can't really tell the difference.

Could you not use the the phono RCAs with an attenuator rather than the Rec button thing on the deck?
Yep that's what I'll do for sure. Alternatively if you drop the output volume on the source down to minimum it works pretty good too.
