Just bought another Sharp 8989 to join the one I bought in July.
This one is in what looks like perfect cosmetic condition and is all working correctly, apparently.

Won the auction and paid, with postage, £77 which I hope will be worth it. I really love the look of the 8989 and the sound quality when cranked is pretty great. Was actually going to go for a 9090/9191 but prices are well above £100 for non fuctioning boxes these days.

Loving the Sharp boxes so maybe get lucky with a 9090/9191 next time.
.
I should get this recent 8989 sometime next week I'll post pictures then.:)

I like quite a few of the Sharp boxes Ghettoboom767, but the 8989 is probably my favourite, looks wise anyway. They are also still reasonably affordable, even on Ebay.

I was just wondering, how much did the 8989 cost new in 1981?
I'm sure you girl loved it as it's a classic looking quality box. :-)

Hi Retro,$189.00 brand new in September 1981!
Yes she loved that radio and took it all over with her!! I just wish I still had her as she was everything to me! But life goes on at least I was and am still able to communicate with her a little!😊😎🎶🎼📻

Cheers Ghettoboom, $189 was a fair amount of money in 1981. I was only 6 in 1981 and growing up in the 80's these silver one piece boxes where always around. To me, the 8989 is one of the best looking boxes ever made and I can honestly say that I love looking at them as much as cranking them up,

Takes me straight back to the 80's.

Giving your girl the 8989 was such a big gesture. Really happy you're both still in touch. :-)

Picked up this latest Sharp 8989 today to join my first beater 8989. Really happy with this one.
Cosmetic condition is pretty much perfect and it sounds great. Bit of a timewarp box.

Who ever owned it has really looked after it well. Only small bit that needs attention is a couple of scuff marks on the top left hand corner, but it's minor. The box really sounds sweet with plenty of volume to spare.

I'm getting a taste for these old Sharps. :-)

That certainly looks like a well cared for machine. I have yet to add a Sharp to my collection. Think if I get another box that I may go with a Sharp.

I'm new to collecting Transistorized, but I like the 8989. I bought my first Sharp 8989 in July.

Had a look around for a decent one piece and the 8989 seemed reasonably priced. The 9191 is always more expensive on ebay these days and decent JVC's and Sanyo's are well into the £100's and most are sold for parts tbh.

The 8989 is still decent value even on ebay. Got this one for £77 with postage. It's in A1 condition so I think I've been quite lucky with it.
