Another morals & ethics question, lol

Here is another "morals & ethics" question....
Let's say you are selling a box that has Stereo and Stereo Wide....
Stereo works fine, but Stereo Wide doesn't........or vice versa.......Like, it only plays on one channel.

Or, let's say that FM or AM doesn't work without a lot of wiggling of the switch, and even then, it fades in & out....

Would you be honest, and say so in your description?
Or would you just say "The radio works, but please keep in mind, this item is 30 years old"......... in an attempt to try and cover your ass.

Keep in mind that you are a boombox collector, so you undoubtedly know the condition of every feature on that box. And furthermore, you know that the people bidding on it are also boombox collectors, so you know full well that they're going to be disappointed if you don't tell the truth.

Since we have had a few days to digest Redbenjoe's morel question...which was a completely different situation...

a new question...

This scenario how ever is VERY different in deed....

I feel when any radio changes hands between people, any and all known performance issues should be disclosed to the new potential owner before any sale takes place.

It's not just a matter of right or wrong it's also a matter of what you would want in any trans action you would be involved with.

How many times have you bought a radio online, had it shipped to you and found that it was not what you believed it was.

To me, this is the same as a radio showing up damaged in shipment. You just wouldn't want that.

Agreed completely. Too bad only about 10% of the boxes I've purchased were described fully & accurately. :sadno:

best to say --
" stereo works fine , but stereo wide mode often requires the switch to be moved a few times "

Or....

"stereo works fine, but stereo wide mode only makes sound on the right channel......the left channel is out"

In ideal World, the answer would be obvious. I just wish all of us were lucky enough to have enough money so as to not to be tempted by alternatives of this nature.I know for myself that when well compensated (on my job) it is relatively easy to take a high ground. But I am old enough to realize that if the situation were different who knows how well I would behave.

To me as long as it comes in stereo I'm happy  now on the other hand if you say the tape deck works and one of the functions are not to par like FF or REW, pause, music search or plays slow/fast then that's a whole other issue. Now one thing I often forget to test is recording aspect only because me personally, I don't use it. I also don't listen to AM or shortwave so I never test these either. I probably should test them, especially when selling a box... But when I have sold in past, and someone asks if a function works I will test and either try to repair or let them know it's not working :-/ I also usually state all functions that are working

So in retrospect it probably is important to state all facts in a sale. I personally will be more thorough when going over the boombox that I'm selling

Honesty IS needed when ethusiasts/ collectors are exchanging. My statement on RBJ's thread about UPS picking up the Lasonic (taking parts out of it) was because UPS does not care about our hobby or value any collectibles. They could care less what they are picking up for damaged delivery. I just had to clarify that.

When something is wrong with the radio you are selling its imho your duty to mention this so the buyer knows exactly what to expect and there will be no discussions after the sale.

Sounds like a recent boombox purchase turned sour from another forum member..?

I just sold one of my nice boxes that had a few quirks, I made sure to address them to the buyer.. because that is how I would like to receive a box, knowing the ins and outs.. Same thing with shipping, I pack it how I would like to receive it!

No, nobody here

Just the culmination of many disappointing transactions over the years, even after asking questions in advance.

I think any known flaws should be disclosed!!!
I have been burned by sellers on high dollar radios that did not disclose little things.
For example the speakers on your newly purchased M-90 will buzz at low volume every time the bass hits
because the drivers are damaged. :-/
People dont disclose things because they fear the inevitable, the will make less money due to the condition.
Which in my opinion is only fair.
Honesty will never hurt but a lie could kill you

Yeah that Redbenjoe topic has me nervous, after hearing about UPS packaging that Lasonic at an angle because the box was too small.. :-O
I'm currently awaiting the response of an ebay seller on how they are going to pack a HUGE ass box I just bought..
THey haven't replied back to me yet.. I told them they can detach the speakers and put them in a separate box..?
Alot of these sellers just don't care as long as they are paid, but you think fellow collectors would be honest..

an all encompassing q/a should read
" what works well-- what doesnt --and what is untested "

that covers everything -
right ?

That would be ideal, but.......very few people do it

I thihk Hemiguy Summed up my opinion quite nicely. The more genuine the seller is the more informed the buyer becomes and thus, can resolve any discrepencies with ease later.

Sadly, trust and honesty are rare these days especially on aution sites, but between collectors, honesty wins hands down :angelic:

I definetly would not say that. You pretty much sabatage your auction saying that the "left channel is out". Most people would suspect that the amp is damaged and if you don't know 100% then I wouldn't say that at all.

Be honest, but if you are not 100% sure on WHY THINGS DO NOT WORK, then maybe make a suggestion to the new owner that they check the connections or switches for the left side.....

There is a fine line, good luck.
