Here is my recent added box, it's actually named National Rx-5080, almost identical to Panasonic 5085.

40$ isn't a bargain but it's fine for a fully working and still in good shape mid-size box though :w00t: .

Its sound really surprised me to be honest. By the first look, I was thinking it's just a lower quality mid size box but I was wrong. It's really loud, has very good bass at medium level and good separation despite only has tone control. I can say that is a box you can enjoy listening for hours  .

The overall built quality is nice. It's about the same size as the M70, maybe a bit shorter and 1-2cm thicker, but much lighter, around 7kg (15 pounds) I guess. The case, button, cassette keys are all well made and finished.

And the look, quite straight, simple and symetrical. Love the purple trim and the blue tint on the dial glass. The white 6.5 inch speakers looks so nice and huge. A sleeper for sure  .

Cheers!

It's not that rare in US under "Panasonic" logo.
Yes, even the National one is not rare. I do prefer the Panasonic 5085 because it has separate bass treble control and it use 220v power supply but most of the box I can find are all Japanese domestic model. :-)

Another nice Ambience box!

$40? You ripped off that poor seller! :w00t: :w00t:
Yeah I forgot to mention the Ambience feature. At low volume level it really make different to the sound. That's only Panasonic in my collection has this "Ambience", the 4360 has wide setting and the DT909 comes with Surround mode, which I believe are all the same, but the "Ambience" letters is more cool

Nice score and a very clean box ! I have the 5085 and I agree it has a nice 'sweet spot' at low to med levels with the Ambience on. Placement is important when turning past that tho with feature on.

My daughter likes the purple trim also and called Dibs on it a month ago

Agree! $40 IS a bargain for a fully working unit IMHO, especially if local.

Gorgeous, such a nice looking box with it's clean lines and unpretentious appearance. 'Futuristic' for it's time, perhaps?

Great deal for the price

Sorry for my ignorance, but is the writing on the radio Japanese or Vietnamese? Was that box sold in Vietnam originally?

Hard to not love that classic Panasonic / National design

The writing is Japanese, like most of the box I can find here nowaday, Lasonic. I don't think any Japanese domestic model ever been sold in Vietnam. In fact, international models, like those very popular one such as sharp 777, 9x9x, Pana 5600 that a lot of old guys here own for 20-30 year now is actually bought in another country like Thailand, China, then hand-deliveried to Vietnam.

That's the ones that other collectors here in country more eager to collect (those old guys searching for memories of their young time). Me, in contrary, tend to collect and like the domestic models more. They're 100v though, but I do believe Japanese domestic stuffs are, somewhat, better than exported one, whatever it is a radio, a tivi, a washing machine, a cook or a bicycle ... And the most important part is that: Domestic boxes are just recently brought from Japanese, (through dealer), they're also secondhand of course, but they're usually in much better cosmetic and working condition compared to more-than-30-year-hard-used international models.

Yes, I can also find international boxes in very good cosmetic appearance, like my M70 (sold) and newly acquired 9494. But the bottom line is, of all my boomboxes, only domestic ones are fully working, those international ones always have a lot of issues or problems to deal with.

Yes it's a local pick up from a dealer.

Don't know which time that model come out but you are right, it looks a bit modern despite the classic design.

Thank you for answering my question. I really enjoy hearing and understanding how the Boombox touched the world. Even though I bought them in the 80s, I still think of New York as the SCENE for the Boombox, but then I realize it was/is a world wide phenomenon
