Well the Sanyo C5 arrived today, condition is absolutely stunning, far better than the seller's description suggested and - best bit - the reason for the non-functioning cassette deck was nothing more serious than a broken soldered connection in the three way lead that takes the 12V supply from the PSU (upstairs in the receiver) to the cassette deck and back in the other direction from the cassette deck to the receiver.

I "fixed" this by putting 8 D cells in the battery and then switching on! That connection will be fixed at some point but for my "best offer" of substantially below the seller's £59 asking price, it's a good one.

The speakers are funny looking things but they sound pretty good, bass is tight enough and the treble end of the scale could cut glass, especially with the sustained high notes in "Penthouse and Pavement" which is always my test for the accuracy of a device's performance at opposite ends of its range.
They're a bit light though, and could definitely use some wadding to bring them closer to the standard of the Technics' speakers but hey, I seem to be sticking to my plan to [strike]hoard[/strike] collect mainly three and four-piece boxes, Next? A Sansui CP5 or CP7 would be good, especially as I already have the speakers for the former.

Thanks for that link, naturally I was far too lazy to search for it unaided. :-D

OK, so now I have to add Sanyo C7 to the wish list. Out of curiosity, I just searched among the 3071 tunes stored on my HOX and found the same Specials classic as you used in your comparison between the C7 and your M70.
My comparison was with the Technics SAC-05L, a box that can fill the entire engineering department's building at work with good, solid clean sound.

Sanyo first. It sounded perfectly acceptable but clipped noticeably at anything above 3/4 of the way up its volume scale. That clinically clean treble was a little too prominent at times but overall, had the Sanyo been the one that I'd owned for the last 30 years and three months, I'd have been happy enough to have it.

Then the SAC-05L. It wrestled the Sanyo to the floor, held it by the neck and punched its pretty little face a dozen or more times until the Sanyo could do nothing but whimper and spit out its remaining teeth. Then the Technics stole the bottle of OVD rum that I'd been saving since Christmas, necked it in one shot and barfed all over next door's cat, who'd just popped in to see where the smell of fresh tuna was coming from.

Yep, that's what the difference sounded like to my ears. Technics: Louder than the second loudest thing in my home (when she was still living here).
Sanyo: Tuneful, subtle and surprisingly good, but lacking in bite. I like it, but I want a C7.

:agree: Yeah, I want! So much for my belief that collecting only (with a few exceptions  ) compo system-style boxes would limit my spending, I can see that I will need to make more space and soon.

I like what you did to the speakers in the C9    , at some point I really should start a thread describing how and with which drive units I'm doing this to my JVC PC11, but that's for another day.

Looks super clean!!!!
:-D It is. There were a couple of tiny stains on the left speaker cabinet but they came off with a slightly damp cloth. I don't think that it had ever had batteries inside until I put some in there. The foam on the inside of the battery compartment lid still has its soft, foam-like feel and when I indulge in a spot of secret boombox-sniffing (c'mon, we've all done it! Well haven't we? ), the scent of 1980s Japanese electronic equipment is still there. Mmmm, that smell.
