I had read about this some time ago. In that article they talked about how much crude oil is used to make 1 mile of road and how expensive a barrel of oil costs compared to this process.

Last I had heard the cost of solar panel technology has been dropping fast and the cost of glass manufacturing is all coming together to legitimately compete with the cost of asphalt road surfaces.

I love stuff like this...

Totally awesome. Probably work great in Europe.. I see to many opportunity's for lawsuits here in the states. but brilliant non-the-less. I've heard that there is a paint coming that is solar conducting too. Just paint it on a surface, hook some probes on the outer sides and boo-ya instant solar panel.
