Well after the dissapointment that is the new JVC Kaboom.. (it's packed up and sitting in my closet) :-/ i started to play with the A.L. MIX.. well i'm here to say that this is the Kaboom replacement.. not just the new Kaboom.. but the older models as well.. before i get disagreed with let me explain.. first thing.. it's smaller and more compact.. it's lighter so you can actually tote it around (as i did today).. even with 8 D cells installed.. i finally activated the 7 band EQ.. and wow.. it made a big difference in the sound.. i mean it sounded fine with just the seperate Bass and Treble.. but adding the EQ broght out the highs even more.. making for a much fuller sound stage.. bass is right up there with the older Kabooms.. and it can get loud with no distortion.. you can even order extra parts off of their website like power supply and remote for $5 each with free shipping! i ordered one of each so i can leave a power source in my man cave and the other in my bedroom.. and never hurts to have an extra remote in case i lose mine or it breaks.. i see Hemi's was at the Sunshine mix.. did anyone listen to it? i also know Skippy's got one.. and i know they rave about it also.. in the past.. the way past.. i have raved about the Panasonic RX-DT680 and older Kabooms.. and i got them noticed.. for good reason obviously.. well now i am raving about the new MIX.. think of it as a mini Kaboom of sorts.. and you dont look silly (lets admit it does look that way :-D ) carrying this down the street.. i took it to work a week ago.. and everyone was very impressed with the loudness.. and bass it puts out.. and with the price going down ($225) it's the best portable out there at the moment..

my verdict.. 9.5 out of 10!

The only thing holding me back is lack of AM, which I DO listen to from time to time. But this is definitely on my list to get.

Hi Norm-I actually agree! I do use AM to!
Is there a cassette on this-I don't think so.
But i still may get one,the sound I hear is very good!
Also is there a CD player on this?
Need to know some specifics before I decide.
Have a good one-GB. :-) :hmmm:

yea i dont or never listen to AM radio.. so that didnt bother me at all.. cassettes are a dead format.. and cd's are heading that way too.. my ipod touch does just about everything i need in one small easy to use package.. i work the graveyard shift.. when i get home i put it on my bed and listen to LAST.FM.. Enya to be exact.. sleep music.. honestly this is the only boombox i use anymore.. i've owned at least 200 boxes over my lifetime.. and there all gone.. (cept my first.. Sanyo C44..) times have changed.. and technology has changed.. for the better if you ask me.. i still love looking at the old school boxes.. but i like the all in one setup of IPODS/MP3 players.. but this is just my opinion.. so please no flaming me.. :-D

Frank's sounded great at the meet... A very hi-fi capable unit for sure. And I think it offers great bang for the buck.

Frankly (pun intended), If I were not so heavily into cassettes and the nostalgia of our fabulous radios, this Altec unit could (from a sound perspective) easily replace my boomers as my # 1 portable listening device. It sounds that good...

I need to keep my wife away from those, or she'll want one and my bbox collecting days will be over. J/K.

Awww, who'm I kidding... I'll probably have one in the not too distant future!!!

The only regret i have in buying mine is , i dont carry any of my others around anymore.
I carry a box around almost every day if i get a chance and it used to be my m-70 or crown csc 850.
The IMT-800 is the greatest modern all in one carry along solution i have found to date.
I love all my boxes and do intend on bringing the others out again but the Altec is my main box
for carryin.
Im at work listening to some Tribe called quest on mine right now.

I am glad to hear they didn't cheap out on the sound quality. It is all too common for manufacturers to forget about the highs because they think bass is what sells. Witness the Sony "shelf systems" that are bass-only and are only good for hooking up to video games, not real music.

will this fit a ipod classic 120gb in the front ipod-case, or just on top?
