I Am Legend
its been brought to my exclusive attention

by hundreds of member here --
that i have not told an old story for a while |-) |-)

so...i have one to share with this enormous audience
------------------------------------------

it might be hard for many of the youngsters here to believe-
but --WAY back in the day --
there was no such thing as an audio cassette !!!

and all the true audiophiles claimed that was NO needle or turntable at ANY setting
or at ANY PRICE --that would not gouge scratches --worse and worse-
each time our vinyls were played --

and the ONLY way to have any 'new' sounding music -
was to play our records ONE time only --
and record them to tape --

no problem -- :surf:
i loved all my giant 10" reel-to-reel machines--
had sony , teac and my next to last best one was
a gorgeous tandberg
-----------------------------
but -- then - i laid my eyes and hands on this mega-ultra- beautiful
10 incher = BRAUN # TG-1000

this incredible heavy pro-quality machine was my heaven !!
looks , build , sound and performance was the very best ..EVER

in FW or RW --
in could beat a porsche turbo off-the-line !!!
zero to sixty in about 2 seconds .,,  :-O

i was lucky to have a somewhat sexy girlfriend --back then - :-D
but there were SO MANY nights and hours --
that not much she could do for me :w00t: ;-) ;-)

was any better than popping in some good headphones-
dimming the lights --and watching these big wheels
go round and round and round and round...........

now watch this video --
some may see what i mean :-D :-) :-D

Well, in the late '70's. As the hi-fi audio wars were at it's peak and me a budding teenager, I also subscribed to the practice of immediately recording vinyl onto tape. Luckily there WAS cassette tapes and I bought high end tapes by the case load. Now, looking back, I can't believe all those MAR-90 tapes I had were tossed as cassette decks began it's decline. Has anyone seen the prices these olf MAR-90 tapes are being sold for?

Anyway, much as I coveted those big RR's, I never could afford one. No matter, I still can't fathom how it can be compared to sex.

I can relate, also being an old-timer.

Spent the sixties recording Chicago AM pop radio (WLS. WCFL, etc.) (LP's not so much) on reel-to-reel. Got three big cartons of 7" & 5" reels in the basement even today. Some have become brittle, but most have held up well. Although I've never sold any or made copies of them, "soundchecks," as they're now called, are big business for those who deal in them.

In the '70's, I picked up a beautiful Teac X-2000R component r-2-r (at a pawn shop) that plays 10" reels, but that was at the end of the r-2-r era, and, as a result, I've never really used it much. It sits on the top of our stereo cabinet, plugged in and connected, but collecting dust. Unfortunately, it's a 4-track stereo machine and requires some finagling of the controls to play the 2-track mono 7" reels with the radio soundchecks. Fortunately, I also still have the original Voice of Music mono "tabletop" unit (the same kind our teachers in school used, and it weighs a ton), which still works, so I have a way of playing my stacks o' tapes. Can't believe the belts and tubes in that ol' V-M still function after all these years!!

I owned a Columbia Masterwork reel to reel from the late 60's. Nothing special - transistorized, stereophonic, dual-speed and only took 7" reels. Thing is, it had a magical fidelity to it. Any high-energy rock placed onto it suddenly sounded raw and live, like sitting in on the mixing board at a concert. Plenty of distortion, but oh was it warm and flubby. I played with it a bit, then a channel went out. Gave it away to a MIT student who wanted it for a tape reverb project. I still miss that thing.

Obviously not the same pedigre - not by a mile - as a revox or tandberg, but it gave me an understanding of how reel to reel equipment had something special to it and rightfully inflamed passions.
