At this point in my collection I have achieved some BIG FRIGGEN radios. Some serious heavy weight monsters.

J1, 777, VZ, 975 among others....BUT.....

They seem to be seeing less and less use :blink:.

I have been using my new camper and the biggest radio I can fit in there is the M70. That ain't no Superjumbo :sadno:

Been going to the beach with my wife....We park in the "Free" section (cuzz we're cheap a$$es) and have to walk a half mile to the water. The biggest radio I have brought out there was the Toshiba RT-S84 BECAUSE I have a custom strap from Blu_Fuz and it's fairly light..

I recently gave my Nissan Sentra to my step daughter, so my daily driver is now the 308. Ain't fittin' no Super Jumbos in that :sadno: (Makes me long for a newer Corvette)

To be honest with you....I haven't had the need for that much VOLUME / POWER so smaller radio's have been enough...

No, I am not selling any Jumbo's :sadno: In fact after seeing :police: THAFUZZ's Wheely, I know I will have to track one down.

BUT, there is a piece of me that feels like I'm letting down some unspoken oath to have the Biggest Baddest Loudest Blaster out there...

Am I? :blush:

Well the only biggies I got are my VZ2000 and Sharp GF9000 and they're not in super jumbo territory anyway. Plus I struggle to carry the VZ to the car never mind carry it around with me lol. The 9000 is just too precious to me to take out after the ridiculous number of hours I spent rebuilding it. So it's my 9191 that I always take as its just about perfect for a carry around box IMO :)

Hey Chris, you're definately not the only person who prefers mid sized boxes for regular outdoor use. It's not the size so much for me, it's the weight. Even my 'mid sized' Hitachi TRK-9150W at 12kg is just too heavy for carrying long distances and a box that weight definately won't work with a strap!! :-)

I liked the Toshiba Bombeat.
The speaker design reminds about some 80's Hi-Fi speakers like this Akai.

My collection is mostly multi-piece multi-ton systems...but I do have more suitable ones for outdoor and carrying. :-D

No worries chris. At least you have the big ones just in case. Its funny when someone sees your 'small' radios and think they are massive. You chuckle and stashed away are your boxes 2x and 3x bigger to show off. The only reason my big boomers get used is because I set them up at work on my computer.

Once we have the big boomers we never have a problem using mid size ones. But if you don't have a massive and large box you cannot love the mid size ones. That is me.... Haha

OK, I'm glad I'm not the only one who realized this!

I think you guys are right, collecting just naturally leads to the BIG BOYS...and as a collector, you need them in the collection just so you can show the "Other People" what the monsters look like.

But day to day use just points me to the mid sized radios. Since getting the GF-9090 from Kenpat my mind has just suddenly shifted. Now my mind is wanting Solid, Mid Sized Performers.

I have seen the beauties you collect...and have thought to myself "Is that a street machine or a shelf queen?" Big Power Amps, wooden speaker enclosures! You have to thank the designers for including a battery compartment..BUT... ;-)

Those are totally the same tweeter covers! I loved that era of speaker design! CLASSY in my mind!

Yeah, I think that's the collectors progression! HEY, Look at me! I'm a real collector :lol: :lol: :lol:

The truth of the matter is, Glucifer and Monolithic do haul the big boys around! James with his J1 and Rick with his 975. I think Rick has even walked to work with his VZ :w00t:. That's just NUTZ :bow:

The big issue with carrying a box around is the volume required I find. I've found 90% of my midsize boxes (ie most 8 D size) just don't have enough grunt to be carried around at a volume that goes above the traffic and other outside noises. I guess this really depends where you're carrying your radio too. I'm currently taking this guy, and I need to have him on about 90% volume outside.

It's by no means a super-powerful high quality box, but the 10D's make the world of difference. My 9D boxes are ok to carry, as long as the bass is pulled back a bit, but 8D boxes just can't cut it. Unless it's an M70 which is uncharacteristically more powerful than most other midsize boxes, I find that I have to take a big size box if I want reasonable volume.

I must say, when I say reasonable volume, i mean a level that isn't ridiculous, but it does mean I need to turn it down if I stop to talk to someone... or point the box in another direction!

LOL, When it comes to the monster boxes, I don't think practicality was on anyones mind when they were designed back in the day!

I love em' for their excessiveness and the over the top, bigger is better style. it totally captures that whole era. :lol:
