Hi Guys,

Well I picked up a cheap $20, really, really old school radio today: The mighty AIWA TPR-930 which I believe was made in 1975! :-O The unit is actually a 4 speaker radio with an oval speaker mounted on each end plus 2 round speakers up front! Twin VUs, Loudness, AM, SW1, SW2, FM, Line In & Out with Memory Replay System. I initally thought it didn't have a proper line in due to the lack of a 'Line In' input mode. But it does!!! All you do is leave it in Radio mode and connect your RCA connectors. When you connect the first one, the radio still operates normally. When you connect the second one, the radio automatically cuts out and it's ready for your Iphone inputs!!

The sound is very clear and crisp but has enough bass to make things interesting. The single fat antenna on this unit is one of those ones that push right down into the unit. It's a hugely long antenna and swivels around when fully extended. ;-) It looks gigantic on the TPR-930. :w00t:

It's a heavy (6.2 kg with batteries) little 9V unit and is extremely well built. I couldn't noticable any difference in sound output between DC & AC modes.
I couldn't find any reference to this particular model on Boomboxery.com so I assume it must be a rare bird.

It still needs some more cleaning work and requires new belts but it is complete!!

My first 1 piece AIWA! :-D

How many of you guys have got one of these old AIWAs??

James.... :-)
It's the one in the bottom right corner.

Thanks mate. This must be one of the earliest stereo radio/cassette recorders out there. I've just serviced all controls and fixed a sticky power button and all is well. The deck has the biggest flywheel I've ever seen on a boombox. Lots and lots of fine thread screws on this one! I've just had it down at the park and it sounded pretty good actually. It's a funny little radio and I love it!!

Cool unit! Reminds me of the Williamson Enviro Stereo.
I had an Aiwa like this once, it had strange angular designs on the grilles. Solid sound. Nice :-D

ive got 2 940's,a year or two younger than the 930,with treble and bass controls seperate and a loudness switc.im very impressed with these, both in looks and in sound, one works on the deck and the other doesnt, have heard they are a nightmare to do so one fully working will suffice i think-the 930 here looks great ;-)

Nice Stereo, looks like the early Sony's. Very interesting with the side speakers. Must have some great sound when those speakers bounce off the walls.

What does the "Memory" button do?

You guys are really finding some rarities.

I LIKE IT!
