A Question Of Volume

One thing I've become very aware of of late is the need to have a certain level of volume when carrying around the streets.
I find a HUGE difference in what is 'normal' listening volume indoors to what I consider normal outside, and on numerous occassions
I've found boxes that I listen a lot at home, and get all excited about carrying then end up too weak to cut the mustard outside and end up putting on a pretty disappointing display.

Indoors we can position our boxes perfectly for stereo separation and be an ideal distance from them. When carrying the box is projecting the sound away from you and is well below ear level (if carrying by the handle, I don't do the hollywood-shoulder carrying). I find that most times at home I'm on maybe 3-4/10 volume for most listening, but outdoors this is more like 6-7/10. As we all well know many box's bass craps out around halfway, so the whole idea of these things being designed to be carrried around outside must come into some sort of question.

Of course theres loads of boxes with volume to burn outside, especially the larger classics like the C100/GF-777/M90 etc. But I find a lot midsize boxes, regardless of brand or quality are, quite bluntly, rubbish out on the streets. Theres certainly a lot of tuning you need to play with for sound on any box outside at volume, making sure the loudness is off and balancing out the treble sometimes helps, but again, this is usually at the expense of the range you're going to get.

I've carried all my big onepiecers (bar the VZ's) to work at some stage or another and now that I look back at which ones are my go-to boxes to load up with batteries at the start of the week the list is actually pretty short. I'm not going to go through them all, but without a DOUBT (regardless of recent incidents) the TRC-975 delivers the best sound to weight ratio when out carrying. Then followed by the Conion TC-999/C-126, Sanyo BigBen (this is a bit of a pain to carry due to the depth though, the sound makes up for it). The TRC-931, RC-M70 and high end Toshibas and Panasonics go next and then you step down to the RISING 20/20 and the GF-9000. The C100s/M90s/777s/etc of the collection are just a bit too heavy for every-day use, I find, but their sound outside is always totally kick arse.

This is something I ponder about quite a bit as I work on my theory that boomboxes, portable stereos and ghetto blasters are three markedly different designs that were made for specific purposes. And it's starting to gain a bit more credence with my experience on volume outdoors and in particular the Lasonic TRC-975 which is truly designed to look like a ghetto blaster, but in the essence of it's sound reproduction it actually IS one.

Just some musings on my behalf, but something I'm sure lots of us can share some theories about. And even more so, what have been the best results you've heard from your radios out in the streets while carrying? Or cranking outdoors in general.

Rock On.

I totally aqgree! I've made similar experiences. I mostly take my GF-777, M90 or for smaller occasions my M70.
I once took a Hifi Studio with me because it's indoors performance is outstanding but outside it's not that great. Much too heavy anyway

Yeah, you NEED that volume out in the streets/open spaces to avoid the music from being washed out by the competing noise of motorized traffic and whatnot...

Bass is good to have but almost something you don't need when walking around...

I like the weight/sound of TC-999 and i931... The TRC-931 is heavier and becomes a strain after awhile (used to be not so much of a problem back in the 80's but now starts to hurt my lower back... I can't do it like I used to as a kid). The M90 is best for sound and loudness but heavier than the TRC-931. One box I don't like carrying is the J-1 Super Jumbo because of its depth - as light as a TC-999 but TOO bulky!! The JR-711 is all around perfect in and out the house!!

thats why all boxes should have had provisions for straps that way it could have been hung on the shouders giving the arms and hands a break like the m70 and the 550 :w00t: :w00t: :-)

I've found from personal experience that the Sharp GF-8989II is fantastic
for outside listening!! I used mine in the 80's for years and they get
loud and sound great!! :surf: :breakdance:

sounds like you need an SCR-8 or maybe a Blockbuster.....
:agree: I just put my SCRATE back together (SCR-8) a couple days ago, and I just realized how LOUD IT IS!! :breakdance:
I really only listened to it for 5-10 minutes when I first got it, before stripping it down for the paint job.. SCRATE-sounding Box!
Was watching the LEDs bounce while blasting some RUN DMC yesterday! Can't wait to hit the streets with it...

a panasonic 5050 will do the trick :w00t:
 :agree: For carrying around, the 5050 would do great. The power to weight ratio is one of the best. If I want blow everyone away at yhe local skate park and wow the rest of them with sheer power and clean highs. My Fisher 492 is My powerhouse. But, it's too impractical to carry it around (at 33Lbs. w/o batteries). There's a reason those "Big Empty boxes" were made light weight. For true portability. My TC999 will be making It's debut as soon as my battery door arrives. Big 8" woofers and light weight will make it fun to take outside with that color.

My favorite carry around box is my M70C. That sucker is crazy loud and the strap makes it a breeze to carry. The M90 is next but I only take it outside if it is going to be stationary at the hoop courts...it gets very heavy after a while. The 931 is very light and loud and all that chrome gets lots of attention. My Prosonic 9962 is also a good carry around box. It is relatively light with good sound and volume.

Just came back from carrying my M90 to the field across the street in Cheltenham Township to shoot some video... On the way back, I had the volume cranked halfway playing some Japanese Hip-Hop and spotted my nephew walking out the driveway I was walking in. He said it was "loud as ****" and sounded good! I told him I didn't notice how loud it was. Hahaha!!

Room acoustics are the reason why most boxes will kick arse indoors. Outside, there's really no such thing as acoustics so the ones with a nice mid-bass to mid-highs tonal quality will stand out more volume-wise.

My favorite carry-out box is my GF6262; heavy and well built but small enough to not be awkward; and loud as all hell! Not to mention it has the best tuner of all my boxes.

Hey Rick, as I have preached many times...I feel, especially in this situation that The Lasonic TRC-920 is the answer here and I'll tell you why....

First and for most it is a flat out LOUD mid sized box, right in line with the M70. For it's size it's a bit heavy and certainly heavier then the SCR 8 (which you should have in your collection anyways :-D ) But way louder than the SCR 8.

You can easily push the volume to 7 while running the bass at half or more (at normal indoor volume, I run the bass at 2/3).

It's sound quality (hiss) is not as clean as most other mid sized boxes but outdoors and at volume, that is irrelevant!

Is it as loud as the 975? NO
But it's way lighter and it's still LOUD!

Rick my friend....you have a great radio for damn near every occasion....I think your really missing out on this one.

I'm halfway to landing a SCR-8 and after that a TRC-920 is NEXT.

I'll have a few dolllars to get a nice one in a few weeks, so if anyone's looking at moving one on soon please let me know!
I'd MUCH rather buy from someone on here than get one off u.s ebay.
