** A cool Sanyo M9990K joins the collection **

Hi Guys,

I've always wanted to get into Sanyo boomboxes to rekindle the relationship I had with this brand in my teenage years. Unfortunately, I've been very unlucky with almost every Sanyo I touch dying in my arms with failed tuners, amps, etc. A few members might remember a M9994K I parted out due to various issues including a failed volume pot. I then bought a 9998K that worked for a few days before it lost the left channel and then both channels. Finally, it wouldn't even power up!!
I then got lucky with a nice Sanyo M4500K but really wanted a Sanyo with more bass so the search continued.

I've been desperately trying to find a really nice 9994K.....no luck so far. So what's the next best era correct Sanyo model in the line up?.......That's right, the Sanyo M9990K! I spotted one on Ebay that wasn't getting a lot of attention. The listing described it as in 'Very Good Working Condition' but minus an antenna. I ended up winning the auction for $84 but the seller ended up giving a partial refund of $30 due to some condition issues so for $54, it worked out a nice deal. ;-)
The seller did a really nice job on the packaging and thus it arrived in one piece.
Photos are of the unit as received. It still needs a good clean and smells slightly of tobacco.

Although the deck does FFWD, RWD, PLAY, Pause and Record OK, the belts are worn and cracked so will need work. The clock does work on tape mode but when you select the radio, the clock screen fades out. Any ideas on a fix? The clock battery backup terminals have acid damage and even after a clean up, the problem persists. The volume/treble and bass pots were a little scratchy but have cleared up nicely with a little use.
Luckily the main batteries terminals are perfect and work fine on 8 D cells.

But.... the 4 band tuner works perfectly on all bands with a strong FM Stereo performance all with no antenna! The sound quality of this unit is just fantastic! It's nice and loud and doesn't distort until your up above 3/4 volume! :w00t:

Now let me do a little comparison.......This particular 9990K sounds beefier and stronger than my very nice Sharp 9292!! I know what you saying, your 9292 must be sick but I've compared my 9292 with Scotty's healthy 9292 and both sounded very similar.

So this 9990K is my one piece box champion to date. :w00t:

I've heard here that the 9990K had nice bass and clear highs and now I'm a believer. It's hard to believe the 9990K only has 3.5 watts per channel.

I thoroughly recommend the Sanyo 9990K if you want a really well built 70s box that's compact, efficient and packs some nice bass!!

Now the search continues for it's big brother, a fully operational (and cheap) 9994K ......

James.... :-)
P.S. Anybody got a 9990 antenna for sale??

With efficient speakers and a good, clean audio amp design, those 3 and a half Watts per channel will do the job just fine, Amstrad or Binatone would probably have referred to the same "real" (RMS) output as something in the region of a trillion watts "PMPO"!

I'm glad to read good things about this model as I may be about to buy one for my own collection. From what I've seen of my Sanyo C5, the makers are capable of some very impressive build quality in their products. Nice buy, well done that man!

Gorgeous!
I love Sanyo because when I think of my earliest memories of my friends that owned boomboxes,
It was usually a Sanyo. I can only remember one guy who owned a big ol Lasonic in my neighborhood.
I like the stylings even with some of the cheaper ones.

Cheers OSS :afro:

That is a very nice M9990 indeed! I love those units.

I have pretty good examples of the GF 9191 & 9292 here and will agree that the Sanyo M9990 Sounds generally more refined. The bass is a bit deeper and tighter. The GF-9x9x boxes are a bit stronger in the mids and project a more "in your face" kind of sound...

I still have the Sharps, but sold the M9990 because I landed a M9998 (which has a switchable line-in).

I remember back to my basketball/boombox years and a friend had the M9990, I had the GF-9292 and another friend had an M-70... My GF-9292 sound carried noticeably further outdoors than the Sanyo, but the M9990 sounded better up close and indoors. But when Larry would show up with his M70, we'd pretty much turn ours off. Sometimes we'd patch them together with RCAs...

For those of you who may have heard an Aiwa TPR-950 before, I consider the M9990 and Aiwa to be very close to each other in sound and build quality, especially for playing tapes.

Thanks for the comments guys, I've given the 9990K an exterior only clean up today and it came up a treat. The chrome speaker surrounds and handle ends turned up great with no pitting! I transplanted a new antenna and post from a donor box. It is slightly too long and won't clip in but it's better than nothing for the time being. ;-) I got the clock working properly by cleaning up the negative terminal and using a small foil block to complete the circuit - all working fine now. The alarm is a cool function. The alarm must have it's own speaker. Loving the bass of this thing. You can really feel the thump through the handle even on low volume levels. :-D

I took a couple of pics comparing the 9990K and the 4500K which were made around the same time:

Congratulations! Now, you have Me really wanting to get My M9990 put back together. I opened Mine up thinking of trying a rebelting Job but, got spooked and it's been laying that way for months. I completely agree that it is one of the bassiest boxes in the mid size class. It has all the classic looks and great sound and quality build too.
