Just wanted to wake up everyone here and appreciate more our boomers from that awesome 80's era!

If I'm reported I'll walk the plank as long as I'm swimming on a sea of 80's boomers! :-D

these days manufacturers don't give a crap about the appearance of a product , they just make **** look so plain and boring because nobody cares about anything but the tech part . so now everything just looks blank like a touch screen , hell pretty soon if they come out with robot women , they'll prolly have a touch screen where the p#ssy sposed to be .

I was down at my local Harvey Norman store looking for some parts for my 1989 Braun electric shaver today and got sidetracked down the portable stereos / docks row and believe it or not, there are some modern boxes that would kick the crap out of some of the early eighties boxes for sound quality and power. It's true, the current trend is for plain looking units without the bling or trinkets - that can make them look bland and boring. But remember, modern amp technology can really crank the tunes using only a fraction of the power that an eighties box needs.

They just need to make a box that looks cool. :-)

Im hoping Lasonic can accomplish this, I seen on Instagram today that MAYBE, just MAYBE, they might produce a modern boombox, that can play casette tapes. This would be so cool. So many of us would buy one in a heartbeat.

Guys, please excuse this slight O/T, which I shall follow up with a relevant comment in order to avoid making a complete tit of myself but James, I have an '80s Braun and after replacing its internal AA-sized (but LiPo, so 3V) battery, I found that the tiny nylon lug - that transmits drive from the motor to the trimmer part that pops up parallel to the cutting foil - had worn away. The lug is part of a larger assembly and it's not something I can get from Maplin's or indeed any of the usual component shops here. So the question there is this: Does the shop you mentioned sell O/E parts for Braun razors?

I agree about the way that A/F amp technology has moved on since the 1980s, however the small Handover clone amps that people use in "Suitcase" (and more sonically satisfying, DIY builds.. ;-) ) do tend to suffer from overheating and sudden death if they're used flat out for any length of time whereas a typically 1970s/'80s transistor A/F output stage with a couple of nice big Germanium devices in Push-Pull per channel will distort horribly long before it reaches the point at which the temperature becomes an issue. Plus the AD161/162 pairs look quite pretty as well!

..and who wouldn't love the small, clipped on heatsinks on the 0C81s in the foreground? :-)

The shop I went to doesn't even stock replacement foils and blades so small internal parts are a no go!

The D class amps I use don't generate much heat at all. Many board only, low powered amps sold with Tri Path amp chips don't even bother with a heat sink.

I have run my V1 box thumping for over 6 hours in 40 degree heat, in the sun in a black casing once and it worked beautifully. That was hundreds of operating hours ago and it still amazes me with its' performance - particularly outdoors.

You can tell when you've gone to far when the speakers start to get 'shouty'.

I know that new amp tech, speaker tech and all other modern tech has gotten better.

DON'T CARE

I know I can connect my stupid smart phone to any of these "Things" to make playback easy

DON'T CARE

I know the sound quality is far superior, thanks to preprogrammed digital EQ's (up for debate)

DON'T CARE

I know pound for pound that these little footballs are louder than most if not all of my classic 80's blasters

DON'T CARE

If I have to spend $500 on batteries for ALL of my collection, wreck my back and drag them all out to the park and meticulously wire them all together JUST TO BE LOUDER than one of these new BURNT TURDS, then I will BECAUSE STYLE means more to me than "Audiophile" sound quality or "Hipster New Tech".

I would rather grind up my collection with a blender and taken them as an enima than walk down the street with this Piece of Shait! :nonono:

If I had this pile of Crap on my shoulder, aim for the radio SHOOT ME IN THE HEAD!
