JVC M70 cassette deck problem

Hello my cassette deck stopped working on my JVC M70. I thought it was the belt but when I opened it up, the main belt and counter belt seemed fine when I hit play rewind or fast forward the motor and the belt turn but the flywheel doesn’t I’m trying to understand why that would happen when the belt is good. Can anybody help me please? Thanks.

It looks like it has something to do with the little wheel that contacts the flywheel when I manipulate it with my finger sometimes I can get the plate to go for a short period or really slow

Thanks that tread is very informative. The motor spins and belt moves but flywheel doesn’t turn. Perhaps the belt is just loose. I’m going to try to change it and go from there. I didn’t think it was the belt because I was playing it frequently with no issues till one day I was outside in really hot weather and the tape just slowed and stopped quickly. I thought the belt broke so was surprised when I just opened and saw it wasn’t. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated

Sometimes things get gunked up in there with the old grease, dust and dirt.
The capstan (flywheel) should spin very freely without anything connected to it.
If not, you'd have to remove it, clean it, oil it (just a drop or two) and reassemble it.
If you do take it out, make sure you don't lose the plastic washer on the shaft on the front side of the player if it has one.
That keeps the oil from running down the shaft and getting on the tape and pinch roller while playing which can end up with an eaten tape.
