Who has bought their boomboxes brand new in the box back in the 70's & 80's?? Sorry 90's & 2000's don't count.
You actually went & bought a brand new boombox & hopefully you still have it but I know I'm one of them being I bought 3!!
Here it goes:
(1)Sanyo 9970 brand new in the box for $149.00 in Manhattan Electronics District May 1980'!!!!!! I sold to my neighbor who passed away in 86' & I had the chance to buy it back but didn't! :-O
It was dirty & gooey but he died & he had a disease & I was afraid that it may have been contaminated.

(2)My Favorite Experience Of All Time:A Brand New Sharp GF-8989II brand new in the box $189.00 at Team Electronics September 1981'!! I gave it to my girlfriend in 1985' when she graduated from hight school.
Still don't know it it exsists to this day-I may still try to find out someday but she doesn't want to speak to me so It still might be some time before I know if it's even obtainable. It still had the original sticker on the cassette door & has the best memories ever associated with a boombox! My friend Danny who passed away in 97' listened to this with me all the time so this was a special boombox to me!!,
We hung out a hiked all sorts of trails & I hung out with a bunch of friends listening to this & partying listening to my rare cassette which i stil have i might add!

(3)Last But Not Least-The JVC PC-55JW at Dayton's Electronics for $599.00 in May of 1985'!!It was so wicked,I saw these at Team electronics & was drooling over them but they wanted $699.00!! I was also eyeing the black PC-550 to!
I still have it with all the papers & owners manual,.Demo tape & original door sticker & receipt!! This is definately my most cherished box as it to has some incredible memories!!!! It still is in excellent condition & works beautifully except I have to clean my switches one of these days with de-oxit.

So I hope we have a few here that can join in this elite group-the 70's & 80's buyers.
I know Ira & Tony are some of the guys here that can join in on this thread.
I will show some special photos of my PC-55JW soon,
Hope to see some replies on this one & have a great week-Jeff. :-)  :choco: :surf:  :-) :-D

I bought three boomers in the 80s:

1. Lloyds (I think), unknown model #. Silver, fairly large, one-piece but made to look like a component-style. Bought in 83 because it was the best I could afford at the time (just under $200) and returned in two weeks because it wasn't all that.

2. Aiwa CS-250 bought in '85. Knew I really wanted a PC-55 but couldn't afford that, so splurged on this little Aiwa. Nice sound (with dynamic loudness) but not huge volume. Full logic cassette deck, which stopped working exactly one month after the warranty expired!! Gave it to my sister in 86, and have it again now. Not mint, but looks pretty good considering it wasn't pampered.

3. JVC PC-550. I lusted after the JVC PC-55/550 models that a few friends had in school, but couldn't afford one until high school graduation. Parents and grandparents gave me some $$ as a grad gift, and I had some saved. That summer, went in search. I really wanted the 55, but these were nowhere to be found. Finally, I found one little shop in a nearby city that still had PC-550s. I can still remember walking in, cash in pocket, and getting treated like royalty by the salesman (they can smell serious buyers a mile away). Walked out $599 Canadian dollars lighter, and a whole lotta boombox heavier! This was my pride and joy for years, but I sold it in the late 90s (why did I DO that?). Now I have two PC-55s in nice shape, but still on the lookout for that mint like-new one to really take me back.

The only boombox I ever had (prior to 2004) was a Sanyo M9935K. My dad bought it for me from Electronics Express sometime in 1983 and it cost $130. It went everywhere with me. I remember I had painted the grilles red and glued pictures of Run and D.M.C. on either end of the tuner window. Sadly, I don't have my original anymore, but I found another M9935K in 2004 at a Goodwill for $12. Man, the memories it brought back...

The second boomer I had was a Sanyo M9500K which I bought from a friend, but now is long gone.
But i was lucky to find another from a member of Stereo2go.

I also bought a couple of GE's including a brand new GE 3-6000. It was the biggest boombox I had ever had up until that point,I was a Jr in High school.
I remember it cost me $120.00 at the local True Value and I drooled on it every chance I got before I finally saved up enough money to finally buy it.
But it got broken sometime in the late 1990's when it accidentally got dropped from a shelf and broke.

My dad and I went out and purchased, for me, a BNIB Toshiba RT-200S from Brashs, a now defunct chain. I think he paid $225 dollars, real money then.

The joy of unwrapping that beast, I kept the box and packaging for ages too. Nearly wore out the record button making mix tapes. It went eveywhere with me.

It was 1983...I remember it like it was yesterday. Funny how all my 80's memories are vivid, but 90's and 00's memories are just blurry.

And I still have it.

I was lucky enough to buy 3 boomboxes from 1983 to 1985. I dreamed of buying a Conion or GF777 back then but the money was way too much even back then. Two of my friends owned Conion C -100's and I was the official carrier for them. The strange thing is I'm only 21 so I don't know how it's even possible!

I bought one of those yellow waterproof Sonys in 1989. That was my entire "audio system" throughout college......I was too poor for anything else.

First portable radio I bought was a mono Centrex by Pioneer, I ended up taping it to my bike as it was pretty much destroyed, didn't keep this one:

not mine but this was it:

First stereo boombox my dad bought for me was a Sanyo M9990, it didn't fare better than the centrex and ended up being used and abused, only thing I kept was the owners manual and I gave it to JT at the first Sunshine Mix Meet:

not mine but this is it:

Well you know I bought my Aiwa 880 brand new and still have it today, I bought it thru a mail order catalog, I think it was from WDS (Wisconsin Discount Stereo), not sure what I paid believe it was around $300.

It''s not 100% mint as I bought it to be used and back in the day it was common to see me riding my 10 speed no hands holding the 880 with a basketball in the rack on the back, we went everywhere together !! I brought it to school a couple times but had to be careful as radios were not allowed, luckily it fit in my locker. During my short college days the 880 took a back seat to my second purchase a Sharp HK-9000,

mot mine wish I had one still:

2wrkv4o.jpg

which easily drounded out the new wave punk music in the college cafeteria, but the 9000 was a little to heavy to carry around and by than I was driving anyway. The HK-9000 was sold, still can not recall to who or why but Later when I worked for the school district trying to get hired full time as a custodian, I was assigned the girls locker room !!!, the 880 found it self locked in one of the girls sports teams lockers waiting for after school for when I would sit it up on one of the dividing walls plugged in and cranking, nice echo down there in the locker room and no one else around !!

a couple pics below:

My 1st personal mono box was given to me by my folks in around 80-81..not 100% sure of name but it had am/fm and tv1and 2..maybe lennox sound...
My 2nd I bought saving from selling newspapers...It was an Emerson mono from Osco drugs for $40

14v3a83.jpg

My 3rd was the Panasonic RX5010 which I also saved from selling papers in 1983...I got it at Venture for $50 on sale

My 4th was after a month with the Panasonic I was not happy so I returned it to Venture and bought a 3 pce Lennox sound for $70...Larger box and more buttons.

img_0441.jpg

My 5th box was after another month or 2 with Lennox sound again I was not happy so I boxed it up and returned it, then rode my bike clear across city to Zayer to look at 2 different bbx's on sale for $100...The CEC OL7540 and the Magnavox D8443...It took me over 3 hours to decide and I walked out with the CEC because of the sound being better, dual decks and more buttons...

Well about 5 years later I ended up purchasing from Woolworths at the mall a new Lasonic TRC931 for $160 (which I still own) and a few years later I bought a Lasonic TRC975 from same exact store (around 1993) for $190...I still own both of these and have original manual for TRC975 :-D

Bought my first boombox - a Nat/Pan RX-5180 - at a flea market near Janesville, Wisconsin in July, 1983. A couple of weeks later, I was in Madison for a meeting, stopped at American Appliances and found a twin (I was stunned!) - a Quasar GX-3612 - which I snapped up immediately (for $100... not cheap, especially in 1983 money). In that same year, a neighbor got me a pass to the summer Consumer Electronics Show. I went on the last day, and came away with a Toshiba BomBeat 85 which had been on display (no box) and the vendor was willing to part with (for a price).

Got a few more in the years after that, but never anything BIG until I started officially collecting a few years ago.

I wish had kept at least one of them but I sold or returned every one I ever bought.

1) Sanyo M-9902 was my first and got me started on a life time obsession. I sold this one to move on to slightly better boxes.

2) Pioneer SK-21 which I bought from Pacific Stereo but returned it several weeks later to trade for my next and much louder box.

3) Panasonic RX-5100 which replaced the pioneer SK-21 because at age 14 I needed the loudest box I could afford and this seemed to be the only option I could afford.

4) A large silver Lloyds with roughly 8" woofers that I bought from the store Consumers, returned after a couple of weeks because the bass made the case rattle.

5) Sony CFM-31 MonoBox that I eventually sold to my mother who sold it at a garage sale a few years later.
