Over the years I have been lucky enough to stumble across a whole bunch of great electronics finds... I figued it might be fun to talk about some of our best non-boombox finds in the wild, purchased from a store front... Let's stick to gear purchased where the seller charged tax (or should have ;-) )...

While it's not my "best" store deal, I recently stumbled across a Sony PCM-R300 DAT Recorder in a Cash America pawn shop. I believe these were in the $700-$800 ballpark when new, and ticket showed it was originally $400 when they put it on the shelf in the store. You could see it had been gradually marked down several times to a $90 clearance price w/30 day return. (I happen to know how to read their tags and can tell they had $250 in it, so I didn't bother to try to beat them up over the tax :w00t:  ). Clearly, it had been there a LOOOOOONNNNNNGGG time, and the manager told me they didn't have a DAT tape to test it with, but promised it worked and offered 30-day return for full refund, Decent ones on ebay sell for upwards of $150, and sometimes less.. So, its not a super-ridiculous deal, but still pretty good considering there was no shipping involved and the player looks minty and is working PERFECTLY!!!!!! I had about a dozen DATs I recorded at various gigs over 10 years ago that I've been jammin' to for the past week!
I took off the rack-mount handles an moved it into a permanent spot under my right side turntable. :-D

:stereo:

In the past I've also been lucky enouth to find these in pawnshops and thrifts:

  • Nakamichi 481 3-head deck, working for $10 (thrift store)
Yamaha M50 120WPC power amp, working for $50 (pawn shop)
Technics SL-1200 MKII for $70, paid another $75 to repair, (pawn shop)
Sansui Tu-9990 Tuner for $25 (thrift store)
Kenwood KA-701 intetraged amp for $25 (thrift store)
Sony Reel to Reel - $5 (thrift store)
Sansui Tuner for $3 - partially working (personally delivered from thrift store in Tennessee :-D )

Sansui TU-919 for $3.95 at the Goodwill dump. :-D

Other than that, I found an Aiwa AD-F660 tape deck for $3.00 at Goodwill. Oh, and a rockin' set of Sansui SP7500X speakers for $80 off craigslist. The picture below is not mine, but the speakers are the same. Mine also have the original lattice covers.

:hmmm: I've really got to dig in the memory for this thread but I'll try, prices are as close as I can remember Iand I doubt I ever paid more than $25 for anything. Some Items I've sold and some I still have so it's hard to say what's the best ever.

Aiwa AD-F990 - $15
Rotel RPM-100 - $10
Pioneer SX-850 - $25
Sony ICF-2010 - $3
Sennheiser HD-424 - $5
Sony Metal Master 90 - $.49
Countless other cassettes, records, walkmans, speakers, and various boomboxes like Panny DT-680's.

Goodwill has truly been "GOOD" to me.

:w00t: Wow!!!! some really good deals in here for sure...

And I keep remembering more deals, too...

I had forgotten about the pair of 1200's, with a little crappy Gemini mixer and a Stanton bottom S.250 bottom of the line DJ CD player... but all the gear worked and it was in a DJ coffin. Price = $200. The two turntables worked perfectly, and despite some broken off buttons and knobs, the mixer worked okay too... There was candle wax all over the CD player, which I spent about an hour cleaning up on its own... but the whole package worked great. Sold the Turntables in the coffin for $550 on craigslist. :-D

I still have the CD player (which I use) and mixer (which is too ugly to sell).

Also, I found a couple of Nakamichi Metal tapes at a Salvation Army store for $0.25 each.

And in the same pawn shop where I bought the turntables, I remember that I was in line to make a layway payment (they let me layway the DJ coffin package  ). Well, there were a couple of people in line ahead of me and I heard them turn away someone in front of me because "I'm sorry sir, but it's too old and nobody uses tapes anymore. It doesn't have a iPod connection." When they guy left and was on his way out of the store, I saw it was a mint condition Sanyo C-4 three-piece box. I followed him out of the store and bought it for $20. I gave that box to my nephew and he cherishes it :-D

Saw this sitting on the shelf at the local GW for $30. Grabbed it so fast didn't plug it in and test it or anything. Got it home and it works and looks perfect, probably my best score to date. This thing PUMPS pure analog love.

That's a seriously good buy, I would have grabbed it and ran without plugging it in too.

Love the speaks Bobby, I forgot about the pair of Pioneer CS-99 speakers I snagged from GW last month. They could use refinishing but otherwise the veneer and speakers are in good shape.
