What's this?

I vaguely remember this device coming with a boombox I bought ages ago. I've no idea which one, or if I still have it. I must say I've got no idea what it's for. The two 3.5mm jacks have no contacts on them unlike headphone jacks.

It has 'SSP-002' on it

It fits perfectly into the mic sockets of my Sharp GF-9000.

What's it supposed to be?

Agreed! My very original National Panasonic RS460SD has one for each mic socket but the function is the same as your double one.
I'm not sure they're needed on a box with manual record level control though.

I have one of these that came with my clairtone 20/20. Same thing? Always wondered what it was for.

You can just see the ones that came with my RS460SD on the left side of the set in the attached picture.

Is the Clairtone a mono box? If stereo, then it should have either two like the National Panasonic or a double ended one like the o/p's Sharp otherwise you'll only short one channel and if the box has ALC, then you'd make a one sided recording with the other side blanked.

It is not a mono box. I never knew what the "shunt" was for....now I know that it probably came with two originally. I thought I was lucky to even have one!! Wonder how many Gordie has.

GZ, one of my boxes came with a shunt too. I kept it but had no idea what it was for. Strange!
