Well I said I would and I finally did a video with both the Lasonic TRC931 2nd Edition against the TRC975. In the video I only use line in with same song using IPod. I set all settings about the same on both units. Sliders almost all the way up, volume at 4, and both LBS and loudness switch on. I really try not to take my boxes past 5 especially in da house

1st the 931 sounded better than I though it would. Had plenty of bass and highs. In the video I tested with line in but I also tested on my own both the radio and the deck and the 931 really let me down. Just didn't seem powerful enough even with volume up to 7 :-(

Next I tested the 975 and I was overwhelmed by the bass this puts out. Now when I turned off LBS the vibration stopped but that just shows that the LBS function is definetly a cool feature. Since I bought both units new I remember testing them both and was so amazed with the 975 size and sound over the 931. That was why I bought the 975 in the first place 20 years ago. Just like the 931 I also tested the radio and deck and the 975 blew the 931 away. With the volume set at 4 on 975 it was much more clearer in sound than the 931 and still was louder.

So in closing I also had a couple others listen as I tested and both my fiancé Jeannie and her son said the 975 was a much better sounding unit. I think, and I know Chris tried to improve on the vibration, but if that could be totally worked out the 975 would be so improved. Now the video was done with my iPhone so there is more feedback when both play from the mic but all in all I think it's a good comparison. Again these are only my opinions but now having two other people also agreeing with me I'm way more comfortable arguing that the 975 is louder and has way more bass than the 931. Enjoy the video :-)

To Me, The 931 sounded warmer and richer. The 975 sounded a bit more hollow. Thanks for the video Bill.

Cool video Bill. It's really great to see those side by side. They are so pleasing to the eye. Those crash bars are such a great looking design. Just Iconic.

They are Iconic Lasonic's   :w00t:

But like you mentioned, the rattles have to be addressed on the 975. As it turns out, there should be a foam pad that goes between 2 posts on the rear case and the speaker magnet. Mine was missing one and the rear case, which really flexes on the 975 was rattling big time. Add in that the cassette doors flutter and the battery door rattles.

I took medium desity foam weather striping and cut small pieces to go where they needed. You can't see it anywhere and without the rattle, you can turn it up without feeling like you're buzzing a speaker.

My 975 sounds so solid now, I love it, it was almost unusable before.

I know this is semi :eek:fftopic: But here's part 1 of 4 on how to do it

Thanks Chris I saw your video and funny thing was is while testing I noticed both Lasonic tuner were off a bit so I pulled back off to readjust and wouldn't you know it one of my pads were missing. I replaced it with foam pads I had and it made a huge difference.

 Warmer and richer with this song. The vibration in the 975 was noticeable in video but I did find issue to being the foam pad was missing between speaker and post. After repair vibration was gone and I played the radio with both tuned into oldies station and "Youve Lost That Loving Feeling" was playing and still the sound quality, bass and over all loudness went to my 975 hands down. Now I'm not sure if its because my 975 was never beat on but I'm telling you both Jeannie and her son liked the 975 overall to the 931. Jeannie's son loved the bass and even commented on how much air you feel when standing next to it :-).

I'm thinking I should have maybe used a regular video camera and maybe there wouldn't have been so much feedback :hmmm:

I have found that musically, these units are all over the map in comparison. It really depends on what songs are being played. Either way though you can't lose having one or both in a collection. :-D

I think for this to be a fair comparison Bill should send both units to each of us so we can have a listen ourselves. It's the only way to be sure.

Hey Chris mine was missing same piece of foam on same speaker :hmmm: Now I'm wondering if it never came from factory because I never found foam. One other thing I noticed is the TRC931 has 2 center screw posts and TRC975 has one and being a longer unit by almost 6" they really should have had 3 center screw posts on 975. By center I mean center and not edges where they did put screw posts. What are your thoughts?

See, that's interesting, because I only had one as well....If you have the box open, looking down into it, the one on the right side was missing on mine, but who knows how many times my 975 had been opened up over the years.

It totally makes a difference.

And I agree, they should have had 3-4 posts, the back is so vast and with the LBS on, those speakers MOVE and push some serious air. The rear of the case has it's own frequency sound that can be heard when the box is hitting hard. Once you damper that....it's a solid radio!
