Heyya, =)

I remember it was 1977, I was 8 years old & this kid I knew from school showed up in the neighborhood with this ghetto blaster. No one I knew seen anything like it. I remember people commenting that you wouldn't want to lug around a radio that huge & then they started making them smaller, cheaper & the Sony Walkman radio wasn't invented yet. I really believe it was the first of the truly gargantuan stereos & it took like 12 D batteries & had 2 cassettes & 1 of them was side-loading like a car cassette player. I'm betting the GF-777 was a bit smaller. Am I crazy or did something like that come out of Japan before ghetto blasters were really available in the US/Canada? Are there rare models that circulated briefly for the ASIA-PACIFIC before the hey-day hit that were truly HUGE? I'm new to the box collecting genre so I don't know much of the history & can't find any good resources. I know I saw it as a kid & this thing was unlike anything I have seen since. :afro:

Not to discount your memories, but as a child everything seems massive.

I managed to chase down a childhood grail that I remembered as being ridiculously big, covered in LEDs and a confusing level of buttons.

When I got it as an adult it's big (but not even close to what I'd call ridiculous), has a nice LED meter but is certainly not covered in them, and the range of buttons is about standard.

Based on your phyiscal size, and more importantly what you've experienced radio-wise up to and beyond this point can affect our memories greatly. That said I never saw a C100 in person back then, and when I did see big ghettoblasters in movies and videos my mind boggled as to what all the buttons were for.

Not trying to say you're wrong or anything, just speaking from my experience.

Rock On.

Well, after poking around & getting a crash-course in the holy grail GIANTS, I concluded it must be the Clairtone 7980 with alarm sensor. I remember now the side loading cassette up top, the alarm & the funky LED indicators for the bottom tape deck. I remember it more clearly now. I must be wrong in thinking it was late 70's. Kudos to baddboybill for nailing it out of the gate. I live in Canada & it was sold under the 'Clairtone' name but it's the same CONEY ONKYO model. It really does look gorgeous & classic.

good for you!!! Glad you were able to figure this one out. Believe me, I had a few boxes as a teen and it took me a bit to figure out which I had...
