Hey Everyone:

I've been applying like MAD for a full-time HR job in a VERY competitive job market right now. My current position is also two and a half hours commute EACH WAY and my car has over 250,000 miles on it (please stay together, Subuaru!) I have one I am waiting on PINS and NEEDLES on... I would double my salary, because I'm half time right now, and could get my M90 within a few months. I need you to send happy thoughts to the hiring peeps and ask God and/or higher power for favor...

CROSSING FINGERS!

:-) :-) :-) :-)

Hope you get some good news...

But Holly. Regardless of whether you get the job or not......... take my advice. Find another job pronto that is close by, even IF it pays you less. That's because when you factor in all the time lost in your life from the commute, the cost of gas, toll, wear and tear on the vehicle..... no job is worth that. Trust me, we made the same choice a decade ago, taking a pay cut and drop in level but it was entirely worth it. Ever price the cost of a replacement automobile? No, even if a close by job pays substantially less, it's still worth it. An extra 4 or 5 hours recovered per day in your life, each and every day, is priceless.

I have to agree with Norm, Holly. Think about the effect that five hours of commuting EVERY DAY will have on your life, marriage, sanity, etc. Will it really be worth it? What if you had an emergency at home?

:agree: here, I too was working for a trucking company in Chicago about 60+ miles from home. 3-4 hrs driving to and from plus all the driving at work 12 hrs a day :sadno: took a toll on my body now I'm on workmans comp over a year and a half

So... I TOTALLY get it.

There are overriding reasons why I'm staying put at the moment, though.

1. I need experience in the HR field. I have a year and a half right now. Most of those positions, even the assistant ones like I have require at least two years experience.
2. I still have about two full-time years to get my college degree.
3. If I am already in my position it is much easier to get the full-time positions that come up, nearby. I even have two more interviews in the next week or so. I'd hate to take that investment I've made and go backward at this point.
4. Since I work for the government (sorry folks), my next government employer has to pay my wage right now or higher, which I carefully negotiated a few years back. If I take a step back now then get promoted later, it may take as long as three years to make that up. No one has that kind of leverage right now.

If I don't get promoted by February of next year I will seriously consider cutting my losses and stepping back, though.

Yeah, sometimes I think if I just showed them my Avatar, they would just forget all the screening, calling references, and blah blah blah and go... HIRED!!!

I actually had another job interview for a BETTER position Friday. It went SO WELL!!! And the job is better than the one I started this post on. I really hope I get my break on that one. All I need is a break. It's tough in this economy though when so many qualified folks are out of work.

Good luck! Also look into a new car with high mpg. With the miles you are driving it can pay for itself over time.

Hi Holly, I absolutely love to drive, but 5 hrs in the car every day has some serious safety implications as far as putting yourself at risk is concerned, too... That's easily taken for granted versus the financial and time aspects of such decisions. I hope it's at least scenic?

And how much faster would you be able to complete your education if you didn't have that massive commute?

Wishing you the best of luck that something local comes your way. And soon!
