* The 70s box that surprised you the most *

Hi Guys,

Just wondering which 1970s box you've received that was surprisingly good sounding despite the units' vital statistics (power, battery count, size etc).

Now I love 70s boxes due to their dark, menacing colour schemes & high build quality but the lack of bass in many of them was always a negative. For me, two late seventies boxes have bucked that trend:

1. The one mid sized unit that surprised me most was the Sanyo M9990K. It has the best low to medium volume bass of any box I've heard. It certainly isn't the loudest and it overdrives the speakers if you go past half way on the volume with the bass turned up. But for general close-quarter listening, the M9990K is definitely the most pleasing mid sized unit to my ears. I could (and do) listen to it for hours on end. :stereo:

2. The most surprising large 70s box for general sound quality and outright power has to be the Sanyo M9998K. It rides side by side with the M9990K up the volume scale and just when the M9990K starts to run out of steam, the M9998K continues that same bassy sound right up to the next decibel level (really loud). :w00t: Unique build style and quality, no sliders, proper line-in, VUs, Dolby, a great Wide mode, weighted tuner dial, cool green backlight, twin antennas, beautifully full bass, clear highs and plenty of power makes this one classy ride!

Love the style on the 9998, though I've never heard one. And, I too, like most members who have them, love my 9990. Can't really compare it to any other '70's boxes though. The rest of mine are all '80's units (minus a Panny Cobra and a 3-Speaker).

Very true! I have an RC-838 and it sounds very good. It took me a while to clean up all the switches to make it sound even better.
I need to get mine off the shelf and open it up and clean it all again. I have been playing with some many other radio's this one has not gotten the love it needs

Oh, I wasn't sure if the 9990 is really from the seventies... I must say that the sound clarity is really something to drool for, and the bass for this size is very good, though the bass knob could boost at a bit lower. Does your treble knob act like mine? When turning to the last few steps, the highs are instantly boosted and when turning back, its almost like activating and disengaging some kind of boost.

I would need new belts for mine, and there is something slightly fishy going on with the mono-stereo-wide switch...
