Not only that, it could help you with some of your virus issues you've mentioned having issues with. It's not foolproof, but doesn't get hammered like Internet Explorer. :-)

I'm beginning to think you need a new computer guy, with all the troubles you've been having. Too bad you don't live closer to Tennessee.

I agree with the hound of large stature. You should not be having the kind of problems you are. We have a laptop in this house that is running AMD XP-M 2200 processors and Windows XP Professional which were state of the art in 2004 and all I've done is what would be considered basic maintenance and never had any issues. I've also used Norton security products since forever and never had an issue wth viruses or other junk.

If all you are doing is browsing the web and posting he occasional pics (And not the bug infested porn sites! ) then you should have no issues. Also, avoid clicking on e-mails with links to websites in them. 99.9% they are "phishing" or for information or access to your PC or are "spoofing" real websites to hack your PC.

As much as it pains me to say this, it includes Boomboxery alerts as well when it comes to embedded links in e-mail. I don't click on it. When I get an alert I just go straight to the site and then log in. :-)

Could be. There should be one or two solid reputable site the kids could always use. If they are clicking on random sites to get the latest info, such as those that might be run out of some kids basement, the risk is probably there... :hmmm: :hmmm:

The reason being is the popups and auto linking of sites that occurs. Some sites are run by people who earn their "internet millions" allowing their machines to be used as a conduit for adware to help pay for their server space. So you essentially open yourself up to the issues on their machines. My system scans the sites before opening a page link when I search (and sets a safe or sucks indicator next to the site link) and will put them into the crap file to not be opened if bad.

So if they're going to the local news channel for the tide forecast, they're 99.9% OK. If they're visiting Surfer Jon's list of links for best waves...not so much. :-)

Follow the round hounds advice. I actually use Norton 360, but you should be good using Ad-Aware along with AVG Anti-Virus free version.

There is also a free version (I think) of Kapersky's anti-virus that in excellent and doesn't eat up system resources..i.e slow your PC down.

Fatdeezy...what do you recommend long term? :hmmm:

How old is your PC, if you don't know, do you know what processor you're using? That would clue us in quite a bit. :hmmm:

Every computer I've ever owned, that originally seemed lightning fast, eventually bogs down to snail speed, no matter how much maintenance you do. All these helper apps that Internet Explorer adds over time really slows things down.

I say, store all your photos and files safely away. Then remove and do a fresh installation of your OS. I believe your computer will feel like a brand new one again after that.

You are correct on the maintenance. Once he gets the PC sorted out, these are definitely steps he'll have to follow. :-)
