Remember all those Aiwa mini shelf systems from the 90's? Those things actually sounded pretty damn decent. I was thinking about snagging some of those speakers from goodwill, since they're always there, and putting them in one or two of my crappy sounding mid and small boxes. They would have to make them sound better.
I think someone here did something like that recently.
Anyone know the resistance on speakers like that?
Any input?
I really love the looks of my little goldstar 641 but the speakers are ****!
I need to do something about that.

Making sure the Ohms match is about all you can do. Plus you'd have to buy the Aiwa and take it apart to see if the speakers will actually fit. The magnets might be too big.

As to the efficiency rating, that's anyone's guess, as those numbers are not published by stereo/radio manufacturers. Only speaker manufacturers publish those specs.

Be aware that most "mini systems" have foam, rubber or cloth surrounds to help them produce more bass, and thus will sound different than most boomboxes which did not have separate surrounds, just stiff paper edges (which are better for guitar and vocals, IMO).

Nice looking unit for sure.

I have a Smedium Yorx box that seems (for the life of me cannot recall model atm ) similar in layout. Built like a tank and weighs in size wise with my JVC RC-656 , but also sounds like Caraap ! Good idea.

I would say get yours out and get all the measurements you can. Frame dia, mounting hole measurements, DCR's etc and post 'em. We could keep an eye out for ya too. Good one for remembering those Aiwas as they were surprising for their size.

BTW, Wooooossshhh, almost spewed a drink again!

Hey GZ, those AIWA speakers sound great! Mostly because the cabinets are ported in the back.. They pound!
I got these from my thrift at $2 each and hooked em up to my JVC which has 6ohms as well..

Any time you see cheap speakers at a thrift, pick em up! They will come in handy some day for a box or two..

Damn. I could end up buying 20 pairs of speakers before finding some that fit.
