Lasonic made four different radio's that featured 8" woofers. Multiple versions of the 931 all the way into the modern era with the i931. The feature packed 935 and the king of the woofer travel 975. All three of those get their props on a regular basis. You can find a 2nd generation 931 on eBay any day of the week. The 1st gen's are a bit harder to find and WAY hard to find in complete working condition. The 975's are a regular feature on eBay as well, but the radio I am talking about is the bastard child hardly anyone ever talks about.

The Lasonic TRC-951
Minimal chrome, blacked out speakers with black dust covers and few red accents.

I got this radio courtesy of blu_fuz. He is the only member I know with one and at one point, he had two! Knowing I'm a Laconic Nut (if you hadn't noticed), he kindly contacted me first and we made the deal. This was years ago.

All this time, the 951 has been proudly displayed in my collection, in a stack, under the 935 and above the 975. Sandwiched in a Lasonic love triangle.

When the 951 came to me back in 2012 it wasn't in bad shape, but not really in a "Usable State". The tuner does not work. Decks are farked, the EQ was missing 4 sliders. BUT THE LINE IN WORKS!

So she sat....

hmmmmm :hmmm: :hmmm: :hmmm:
Hitting the street....need flash and flare  TRC-935 ! ! ! :w00t:
Going to beat swap in Los Angeles with SLO, Fresh Produce and Mac Daddy Freshness  TRC-975 ! ! ! :w00t:

With the EQ sliders busted out, no FM and no decks.... :-/ She has been over looked more times than I can count.

Today, that comes to an end! :annoyed:

First off, we have to deal with those EQ sliders!
Can't be walking around missing those!

All the EQ pieces were in the battery compartment, right were blu_fuz had put them when he sent me the radio back in 2012

mellymelsr suggested Devcon Plastic Weld to make repairs and the stuff works great, best I have found so far.
20161019_170238.jpg

I had to make a few extension pieces and glue them together
20161019_165412.jpg20161019_170529.jpg

I also used the plastic weld on some screw posts, worked great
IMG-20161019-WA0041.jpeg

While the plastic weld dried (1 hour) I broke out the Wizards wax and went about giving the old 951 a polishing.
After working on the 931 and polishing that to a perfect shine, I was looking at both the 975 and 951. I thought they were both a flat matt finish. As it turns out, the 951 is oxidized. A little elbow grease and all the surfaces polished up to a nice shine. This radio has never had the full tear down. So at some point, I'm going to pull it down to nothing and when I do, I'm going to machine polish all the scratches out of the top, like the 931.

At some point, I'd like to get this into the repair shop to have the radio receiver fixed. Bluetooth parts have been ordered so this radio can finally hit the street. Now that the EQ is fixed.

I think this rare blaster needs to see some sunshine!

Awesome job once again Chris. Lasonic has always been one of my favorite and I do miss many of mine that I sold. One day I will replace them though.

I've always loved the stealthy look of this model. When I met Albert at the old LASONiC warehouse to pick up my chrome 931, there was one on display in the front. I just about creamed my jeans. All I can say...is DIBS! This bad boy deserves some street time man. Looks awesome :chris920:

You were the king of Lasonic's for years and years. I couldn't believe it when you parted with them. Did you ever have the 951?

That's bad ass that Albert added one to the family collection. Plus with a full time tech on the payroll, his must be sweet!

Thanks dits. IMHO, I feel the 935 is the best of the Super Jumbo Lasonic's. More features, great looks. It doesn't have the crash bars like the 931 or 975, but it still looks great.
So, last night while cleaning and polishing, I wiped the edges of the two halves, front and back. Both were dirty and crusty. When I took it into the garage to work on it, I noticed it had the typical creaky sound most of these big black radios have. The handle creaks, the case creaks. In the past, like on my Dynasty HT-959 and Helix HX-4700, I put a lot of effort sealing the edges with synthetic suede. It keeps the two halves from actually touching and therefore eliminating the CREAK.
But last night I wiped down the meeting surfaces with a clean damp cloth, then waxed the edges just as with the rest of the radio and you know what? NO MORE CREAKS! Cleaning the meeting surfaces and waxing them prevents the two plastic halves from GRINDING on one another and making that horrible cheap sound. I took the radio out this morning to take pictures and it's tight as a drum (especially since I fixed two screw posts). No creaks in the case or handle (handle got waxed too).
SO THERE YOU GO! A simple, easy way to fix case creak! WAX ON, WAX OFF DANIEL SON!
She looks good outside!

13 years in this hobby and still no Lasonics.......wait! Did I say that somewhere else? Never mind.

Great box Chris, I didn't even know about this one. Have you got any pics of her lit up?

Right on Chris! Looks great! I've always wondered how much gloss these had from the factory. Anyone here but a black Lasonic brand new in the 80's remember the gloss level?

Back on topic, whats your plans for the tuner? Does it look similar to the 935 or 975 to swap parts from a junker? I know even within a model Lasonic had different parts but maybe a tuner from another might work?

Edit: just re-read the thread, you'll eventually look into it. But Bluetooth is in the plans! Sweet. Try what I found with the grounds with my 920 if you use that same module Joe introduced us to.

yes I've had all the big ones except the 951. Mostly parted with them to get more expensive larger boxes I wanted

The 935, 951, and 975 are all the same size and all use the 935 case. The rear cover of the case model number is molded into the plastic as the 935. They just put a sticker over the mold to label the 951 and 975.

I am 99% sure the main/tuner board is interchangeable with the 975, so if Chris runs across a parts unit he could probably get that fired back up.

Seriously a great job on the polish. I thought the case was a matte black finish as well because all my Lasonics have that same sheen.

Even though I don't use mine much, I don't know if I could part with my 951, it just looks so great.

Yeah, I thought they were matt as well. I am going to machine polish the top and get all the scratches out, but it will require a full gut.

Like me, you can't part with it, it completes the set!

I'm gonna talk with Dr DER about a tuner. He might have one.

OK, spoke to Dr DER, he has a 935 main board with tuner I'm going to try. It will upgrade it from just a line in box to line in/out IF the transplant works!

What?!? The 975 and 951 don't have Line-Out???
Yep, Lasonic saving money again....The only time I use the line in line out is when I am daisy chaining the boxes together, which I have done. We'll see if this works.
