How is it DHL charges less than 100.00 USD( 65 euro) to ship from Germany to USA.
And they charge 900. USD to ship to Germany from the USA
I am so friggin pissed off right now I could see red!

I always use USPS Priority Mail International to ship overseas. For most bomboxes it's $60-100.

I gotta say I really like DHL. 68€ for to kg from Germany to Usa is pretty good especially as packages are insured for up to 500€ and tracking is always included

Also sometimes a midsize boombox is only 45 euros

As is usually the case the U.S. consumer supports the rest of the world because as a country we make more and spend more...too bad we don't get the benefit of any discounts...

Unfortunately it's the same up here in Canada  We get killed on shipping costs to Germany for sending big packages. I sent a big grail to Germany and it cost me $230...by regular Canadapost. I still to this day can't figure out shipping rates

I would have gladly paid 230. But $ 900.00
I just don't get it

Frank, in many parts of the world, DHL is the preferred shipping company but DHL couldn't compete here in the states so they basically closed up operation except for their express mail divisions. But DHL has a delivery agreement with the USPS so our local post office will deliver DHL shipments here in the states. What you should try to do is spend some time and be a little more thrifty on carton sizes. Even a few inches either way will make a huge differences.

Basically, if you can cut your dimensions (length + girth) to under 108", then you qualify for the lower rates. Once you go above 108", up to a maximum of 130", the cost climbs astronomically. Over 130" and it's not shippable via the post office. Some destination countries also can't ship anything above the 108" L+G and some can't even go above 60".

For example, I just checked at USPS and 25lbs. to Germany with a Box 32 x 22 x 16 is $82.17 for priority, $113.02 for express, and $320.94 for global express. I understand that it might be a smaller box than you feel comfortable with but given the choice between $900 and a little more protection, and $82.17 and less protection -- I might be inclined to accept the greater risk of the smaller box, but maybe bolster the corners with metal, wood, more cardboard, or other such creative methods. It takes more work to "make" a perfect box. But the cost difference warrants the extra effort needed to keep costs reasonable. Most boomboxes can fit in a 32x22x16 carton unless..... are you shipping a C100 or Wheely, or J1, or VZ?

I know all about the dimensional weight. Smaller package+ USPS + longer travel time + big fragile boombox = damaged parcel
I'm just not willing to take the chance. The box currently has three inches of cushion all around .
The way packages are handled by postal service is just horrible and I fear another busted up boombox
Is a risk in just not willing to take.

My inlaws just sold an antique clock on ebay. A guy in England bought it. Completely packed, the thing weighed 7 pounds. We took it to post office, would cost $40 to ship, but they wouldn't provide insurance. Since the guy paid $600 (yes, $600), and the thing was over 100 years old, we thought insurance was the right thing to do. So we went to UPS since they insure if they pack it. Cost? $201.98!!!! :jawdrop: We sent the guy the info. He opted to pay the UPS price and had us fill out the paperwork a certain way. When he got it, he ended up having to pay an additional $98! That's effed up right there. Feel bad for the guy. He literally paid half the purchase price to get a CLOCK shipped to him.

For what it's worth, I have had equal luck and equal amount of damage whether shipped UPS, Fedex, OR USPS. So there is no selective favoritism or bias there. Everything that I've shipped internationally got there quicker than the same item shipped here (via DHL) from Germany. Even with the dimensional restrictions, everything that I've shipped internationally arrived intact and damage free. It really has to do with how strong the carton is (soft flimsy boxes need not apply). Australia has even more stringent size restrictions before astronomical prices kicks in. I had to ship something to Glucifer in a smaller than desired box, but he got it OK. I understand wanting a 100% bulletproof solution. Sadly, I think there is none. But if choosing between 90% OK @ $89 shipping or 95% OK @ $900 shipping -- I think I go with $89 shipping.

I have shipped a ton of stuff to Ira 3,000 miles away (not air mail like international shipments would be), and some boxes aren't that big. I think he will tell you my stuff always gets there primo but it's because the boxes are strong and the packing tight (no looseness or voids or paper products).

Norm, I work for a high end av company and I personally ship tens of thousands of dollars worth of delicate av equipment a year, often times not in the original box.
I also have shipped around 25-30 boomboxes since I have been collecting and haven't had a single one get damaged.
That is not because of the handlers I will assure you of that.
I agree with you that there is always a risk no matter what shipper you use and that's why i ship with 4 wall boxes that I build myself
often times and lots of bubble all around to absorb the shock.and also lining the box with plenty of bubble as well (with just a bit of give)
so if someone stacks on the box the packing material itself doesn't crush the radio.
So tell me What size box should I use to ship a 975 Lasonic to Germany for 86.00 bucks because I would love to know.

right -- :superduper: uses a very thick // heavy duty outer carton -
then --1 1/2 of custom cut styrofoam-
then a sturdy inner carton --
then 8 corner pads - :-O

so --even the worst freight employee would HAVE TO TRY
to cause any damage
