Sharp GF9000 replacement speakers?

Anyone got a recommendation for replacement speakers for the 9000?...preferably low cost.

They're 8 inch and 3.2 ohm I understand so I've been looking at 4 ohm ones but I'm no audiophile I've no clue really, just going crosseyed looking and I'm finding lots of bass ones but few full range ones.

Anyone got any low cost recommendations? :-)

At 93 decibels per watt at a metre they're certainly efficient enough for the limited output of a boombox amp. Price seems fair for what they are. I'd try them but then I'd try anything once.

Si, I don't think that you're at all shallow or cheap. And "expert" is a really offensive term as its literal meaning is a has-been with a small drip under pressure. Fortunately, there are specialists on this board, it's one of those you want. :cool: Or you could just do it, report your findings back here and become the specialist on putting custom speakers in a large Sharp. :yes:

The one in Space Lobster's link only gives you 89 decibels per watt at the same distance so may struggle to make enough noise with an AF amp that only provides - according to the manual I'm reading - 11 watts RMS per channel, meaning that at full blast it would be only slightly louder but potentially more distorted than the first one would be at a watt.

Lol I could live with shallow and cheap, I wouldn't argue with that ha ha ;)

I'll take a punt on those first ones then I'll report back with my expert opinion ;)

'Tis a pleasure. I assume that the various dimensions are compatible with the available space? If these are a straighforward(ish) swap then you'd be making a brilliant box even better. :thumbsup:

Just need to see if the seller will tell me the basket measurements to make sure they just slot in as they fit from the front. Should make a big difference sound wise according to those who've swapped them out before.

Biggest problem with this new 9000 is that its got a lot (and I mean a LOT) of emulsion paint spots on it so will take some cleaning :(

The speakers at the first link would be kinda ideal. Those have high SPL and are used in "professional" audio cabinets. And 93dB SPL sounds very good. Only thing that is a bit mystery is how well those would produce bass frequencies... Frequency response is rated to start from 55Hz and that pretty high. But it wont necessary tell anything about the speakers ability to produce the lowest frequencies.

Though, being a "PA" -speaker, I would assume it's made for mid range and in a boombox it could have issues with the lows...

Hard to say any better, the description is quite simple. "Has straightforward tone with smooth highs and more predominant lows."

This -could- work with a higher power amp, because it has low SPL.

Take a close look at the placement of the transformer & other mounted parts/boards & their relative location to the speakers to get an idea of what space you really have. You can pretty much guess-timate what space is available, then go speaker shopping. I had to move the transformer in both M90's I modded & 1 777 too.....The magnets were too big to fit with the original layout...

If the originals are 3.2 OHMS, I'm betting they are HAF's & can do 2 OHMS as long as the heatsinks & caps are beefy...

In some boxes the transformer is so close to the speaker that it makes it hum. This happens at least in my D8634... So there is a risk of humming if the replacement one comes closer than the original.

That potential risk could be averted by replacing the TX with a capacitative dropper, which runs cold and takes up less room. I've only fitted such things to replace hot ceramic droppers in DC mains sets but they're perfectly suited to AC mains too. ;-)
