Sharp GF777 - Tape running too fast

Hi guys,

Tapes are running too fast in my GF777.

You can hear that it's slightly too fast - the pitch is too high and so is the speed.

I've tested it by playing the same tape in my Aiwa and in my GF777 and timing it on a stopwatch. In the Aiwa the track took 10min27sec to run and sounded as it should. In the GF777 the same track took 10min15sec to run and sounded too fast.

I've also tried a different tape. Same thing happened.

I've used a tape cleaner but made no difference.

I need to use the 777 in a couple of days in a performance so need to get it sorted urgently. I can't use the other deck on the 777 as it's not working at all. I'm no mechanic. Does this speed problem sound like a belt issue that I would therefore need to get professionally fixed? Or is there anything I can do myself?

Your advice is, as always, much appreciated.

There is a speed control on back of motor. Have you had decks serviced with new belts. If not I highly suggest you do as these units are 30+ years old ;-)

Hi Bill! Thanks for this. In the end I took it into my repair guy as the other deck needs fixing too, so I guess he'll adjust the speed control and replace the belts too if necessary.

Hope all's well with you.

That's cool a full resto on decks is always best. Make sure to tell tech there are a couple tires used for Rew and ff that usually get very dirty and/or dry and cracked. Usually they can be just cleaned real good so you get maximum speed from ff and Rew.
